Football Supercomputer Predicts 2019/2020 Premier League Table

The start of the English Premier League will soon be upon us and people are eagerly waiting. The transfer window has again been very interesting and fans have already started guessing what the final positions of their clubs will be.

Football Supercomputer Predicts Premier League Table

A BT Sport Study

It is impossible to predict the Premier League’s outcome. Or is it? After the full fixture list ahead of the upcoming season was unveiled, a football supercomputer revealed the potential final standings.

The study by BT Sport was made by leading data analysts with the help of data from different football statistics. Fixture dates, derbies and past finishing positions were also taken into consideration. The supercomputer not only predicts the final position of every team but also top goal scorers, Champions League winners and more.

According to the supercomputer, the main contenders for the title will be Manchester City and Liverpool once again. City were victorious by a single point last season and they are now the predicted champions once more.

The computer also estimates that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will be the other two teams playing in the Champions League, as Manchester United and Arsenal finish fifth and sixth.

On the flip side, Burnley, Norwich City and Sheffield United are expected to be relegated. The biggest surprises of the probable final league table are that Newcastle United finish eighth and Aston Villa coming 16th.

Of course, these predictions can’t be absolutely correct. To study how true these guesses are, we decided to compare last season’s supercomputer prediction with the actual table.

Impressively, the supercomputer correctly predicted the 2018/2019 eventual winners and runners-up, as well as two of the three relegated teams. Brighton & Hove Albion narrowly escaped relegation, two points in front of 18th-place Cardiff City.

The machine was too optimistic for Fulham as they finished nine places below their predicted tenth-place spot. Other incorrect guesses were Manchester United finishing third and Wolverhampton Wanderers finishing in the second half of the table at 11th.

Whatever the actual table is, we are all ready for another interesting Premier League season.
