Cardiff City Seal Deal for Oxford United Winger Gavin Whyte

Gavin Whyte

Cardiff City have completed the signing of Oxford United winger Gavin Whyte. The 23-year-old, who only joined the U’s last summer for £100,000, has joined the Bluebirds in a deal worth around £2 million.

The Northern Ireland international scored nine goals, including a hat-trick at Shrewsbury Town, in 47 appearances in his first full season in professional football.

It’s been a remarkable 12 months for Whyte following his transfer from NIFL side Crusaders to joining the Championship outfit.

U’s boss Karl Robinson certainly got the best out of Whyte during his time in League One and as a result, he was called up to the Northern Ireland squad where he has made five appearances and scored on his debut.

The big question will be can Whyte make the step up to the Championship as Neil Warnock looks to guide his side back to the Premier League.

The Bluebirds are in need of attacking options, and although Whyte isn’t a prolific goalscorer, he will be a good option for the Welsh side to have.

Worrying Times for Oxford

Having lost Curtis Nelson, also to Cardiff City, the U’s have lost two key players. The concern for Oxford fans is the lack of signings arriving through the doors at the Kassam Stadium.

Robinson has only managed to bring in Alex Gorrin, Tariqe Fosu and Chris Cadden, and after the club lost six first-team regular loanees, Robinson has some serious rebuilding to do.

There is still time to bring in new faces, and the transfer money received for Whyte will help if invested in the squad, but the club need to find these players sooner rather than later, otherwise, they may have a poor start like last season.
