Changing Decision

Paul Wilkinson has been appointed manager of League One side Bury just two weeks after signing a two-year contract at non-league Truro City.

The 54-year-old was unable to save Truro from relegation from the National League South.

Wilkinson’s coaching career began in 2000 and has gone on to include spells at Leeds United and Cardiff City.

His first job in coaching came with the youth team at Leeds and Wilkinson has since had two spells in caretaker charge in the EFL, with Northampton Town and Grimsby.

In addition, Wilkinson has made more than 650 appearances as an attacker. In an extensive career, Wilkinson played for Everton, Nottingham Forest, Watford, Middlesbrough and Barnsley.

After joining Bury, Wilkinson said to the club’s website: “I’m delighted to be here, Bury is a club with a great history and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m determined to drive the club forward in the right direction.”

General manager Scott Johnson added: “It’s such a strong foot forward, Paul is a manager with a wealth of experience, something that is modern day and is exactly what we need and is required for League One football.”

Financial Concerns

Bury won promotion from League Two last season; however, the Shakers experienced a troublesome time off the field.

The club faced a winding-up petition and left staff and players to settle with delayed payments of wages.

Ryan Lowe left as manager in June and the Shakers face a 12-point deduction upon their return to the third tier.

Owner Steve Dale proposed to help clear some of the club’s debts. Unsecured creditors, including HM Revenue & Customs, will receive 25% of what they are owed.

If the proposal is approved, the company voluntary agreement would qualify as an insolvency event; therefore, Bury would receive a points deduction.
