January 23, 2017 – Today, Gerard Deulofeu signed on loan with AC Milan for the rest of the 2016-17 season. Milan are currently in seventh place in Serie A, 11 points behind league leaders Juventus.
Deulofeu originally signed with Everton on loan from Barcelona for the 2013-14 season. He previously played at La Masia, Barcelona’s world-renowned youth academy. He made 25 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals. Former manager Roberto Martinez liked Deulofeu, but he returned to Barcelona to compete for the first team. When he returned, Luis Enrique decided to loan him to Sevilla, where he made 17 appearances, scoring one goal.
Gerard Deulofeu’s Return to Everton
On July 1, 2015, Deulofeu re-signed with Everton, but on a permanent basis. The transfer fee was reportedly around £4 million. Playing under Martinez again, he made 26 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals.
However, at the end of the season Martinez was fired and Ronald Koeman took his place. Under Koeman, Deulofeu quickly fell out of favour. He did not provide the effort the Dutchman demands, so he has been pushed out. Koeman has preferred the likes of Aaron Lennon, Kevin Mirallas, Yannick Bolasie, Ademola Lookman, Enner Valencia and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to him.
If Deulofeu had put in the effort, he could have been a valuable part of the squad. Sadly, he has not worked out at Everton so far. Hopefully, this loan will revitalise him, and help him compete for the first team next year.
