It’s been nearly five months since Antonio Conte was asked to ‘clear his desk’ at Stamford Bridge. Speculation about the Italians departure had been rife throughout last season, as Chelsea struggled to defend their title.
Blues fans became increasingly frustrated as performances fell well below par compared to the previous season. Some blamed Conte’s defensive tactics, meanwhile, others felt the former AC Milan boss had lost the respect of the dressing room.
Antonio Conte and Chelsea Heading For Court Showdown
A turbulent season did end on a high note, though, as Chelsea clinched FA Cup glory with a 1-0 victory against Manchester United. At that point, it seemed as if the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge were waiting to announce his departure. But how can you sack a man who has just won a major trophy? Well, you wait a couple of months for the dust to settle. At least that’s what Chelsea proceeded to do.
Following Conte’s sacking, no severance was agreed between the clubs, and they now appear to have reached a stalemate, according to Sky Sports News.
Chelsea want to reach an agreement and have attempted to schedule a meeting with Conte and his lawyers. He still had 12-months to run on his contract and is also reported to be claiming damages on top of his annual salary. Overall the whole compensation package would total £20 million.
Chelsea are not keen to make a substantial payment as they feel the Italian’s behaviour with regards to a number of misdemeanours gave them the right to terminate his contract, the Diego Costa saga being a key factor. It is also claimed Conte failed to fulfil other club commitments.
Where Will This End?
This is likely to drag on for some time. Conte’s representatives may take the matter further if a resolution cannot be reached. The whole matter is likely to end with a decision being made by The Court of Arbitration for Sport.
It’s a sad state of affairs after what was a glorious first season for Antonio Conte. Sadly, the bar is raised very quickly in modern day football, and his second season didn’t live up to the expectations of the club or the fanbase.
