German midfielder Emre Can has left Liverpool following the end of his contract. The club announced on their website that he and academy graduate Jon Flanagan were to be released by the club. The 20-times-capped German international was omitted from the German squad who will be competing in Russia in the upcoming FIFA World Cup. This was a result of an injury-hit campaign for the midfielder.
Liverpool Release Emre Can
The Next Step For Can?
Can is a highly-rated player. Had he stayed fit all season, he’d have been nailed on to go to Russia with Germany. At 24-years-old, signing Can on a free has the potential to be one of the bargains of the summer. Can made it clear early on during this season that he was considering leaving the Merseyside club. Juventus and former club Bayern Munich both have a reported interest in the midfielder.
The ex-Bayern Leverkusen man has already been replaced by Liverpool. The Reds have brought in midfielders Fabinho from Monaco and Naby Keita from Red Bull Leipzig. Liverpool’s spending could hit the £150 million mark when the expected signing of Nabil Fekir is completed and it is not even mid-June yet.
Uncertain Time Ahead For Jon Flanagan
Liverpool academy graduate Jon Flanagan has also been released by the club. The 25-year-old has played over 50 times for Liverpool.
Flanagan was arrested in December of 2017 after assaulting his girlfriend. The full-back was sentenced to 40 hours of unpaid work and 12 months of community service.
Following the incident, many fans called for him to have his contract terminated. However, Liverpool allowed him to see out the remainder of his deal. It remains to be seen if anyone is willing to take a chance on him. Brazillian legend Cafu once labelled Jon Flanagan as his heir. It looks like a massive waste of a career for the once-capped England international.
