Terence Kongolo has completed a permanent move to Huddersfield Town from AS Monaco. In a surprise move, Kongolo has left the French Ligue 1 club after only one year of a five-year contract.
Huddersfield Complete the Signing of Terence Kongolo
The defender got a taste of regular first-team football at Huddersfield last season. He spent the second half of the campaign on-loan in Yorkshire. On his return his parent club, the Dutchman made it clear that unless he got a guarantee of first-team matches he would be looking to leave.
Since no such assurances came from Monaco, Kongolo kept his word and looked to find a club where he was guaranteed match time. Offers came in from Premier League and elsewhere for the 24-year-old, with the Dutchman opting to move to the Terriers.
Having cost Monaco £13.5 million in 2017, the deal with Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee is interesting. Rumoured to have a release clause of £45 million, the Dutchman may have managed to find a way around this.
Spending the time in England from January clearly impacted on the 24-year-old defender and with his brother Rodney already playing in England, a permanent move to the top flight was always on the cards.
What Does This Mean For Terence Kongolo?
Coming back to England, where he himself admitted that he gained such a lot from playing with Huddersfield Town, the Dutchman said in De Telegraaf: “In England, I have become stronger physically and defensively, and when you play against opponents like Chelsea and Manchester City you become better, smarter and stronger, you train more often and often go to the gym, and I feel fitter now.”
The defender will get more game time, which is what he has been looking for. His performances have gained the 24-year-old a place back in the Dutch national team, proving that regular first-team football brings rewards.
