Portugal Team News
Portugal have a fully fit squad to pick from. Before their last 32 clash with Croatia, Martinez spoke about the knockout stages being almost like a separate World Cup.
“Tomorrow we will begin the second World Cup, the preparation was very important,” Martinez said, referring to the three group games that he deemed “difficult.”
Martinez’s team may have pushed their luck at times in the previous round, but their class cannot be underestimated, with arguably the best midfield in the competition.
Spain comes into this game looking strong, but they only have one player out, with Nico Williams sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Portugal defeated Spain last year in the UEFA Nations League final. Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has revealed to the press that he has watched that game back, but expects it to be a different game:
“It’s a knockout game and we have to play in the best way to get victory and that’s what we’re going to do and not let the opponent control the game,” said De la Fuente.
