Three Memorable Oxford United Wins at the Den

Oxford United have faced Millwall several times over the years and have managed seven wins in South East London, including victories in their last four visits.

While it would have been nice to head to the Den in need of a win to keep their Championship survival hopes alive, unfortunately that’s no longer the case.

However, here we pick out three of the best victories at the Den as Matt Bloomfield’s side end their season on the road at the automatic promotion hopefuls.

Three Memorable Oxford United Wins at the Den

0-1 – January 1, 2025

Oxford United picked up their first away victory in the second tier on New Year’s Day at Millwall last season.

Gary Rowett, who replaced Des Buckingham in December, had won back-to-back games at home and ended their winless run on the road with a Ruben Rodrigues goal at the Den.

The game came against Rowett’s former club who had Alex Neil in the dugout for the first time.

0-3 – April 22, 2017

Like this season, Oxford travelled to the Den at the end of the campaign, and it was an emphatic away win for the U’s when the two teams faced off in League One in 2017.

On-loan Everton forward Conor McAleny netted twice in the first half before local lad Josh Ruffels headed a third in the second half.

Despite the defeat, Millwall finished in the final playoff spot and gained promotion to the second tier with victory over Bradford in the final. In contrast, Michael Appleton’s Oxford finished eighth, four points behind the Lions, in their first season back in League One.

0-2 – January 14, 2016

2016 was a memorable campaign for Oxford United as they secured promotion from League Two and enjoyed successful cup runs.

The U’s saw off Premier League side Swansea in the FA Cup just days before victory over Millwall helped them on their way to the Football League Trophy final at Wembley.

Kemar Roofe, who netted a brace against the Swans, was at the double again at the Den as Oxford won 2-0 in the first leg against their League One opponents.

The Lions did win the second leg at Grenoble Road. Still, Oxford would head to Wembley to face Barnsley in what was the final game of the competition before its format was controversially changed to include Premier League U21 clubs.
