USMNT Team News

Mauricio Pochettino’s squad appears to be coming together as we edge closer to this summer’s World Cup. The USMNT coach appears confident his squad can make an impact this summer. Building up to the Belgium game, Pochettino repeated a message he delivered directly to his players:

“Dreams,” he said, “inspire reality.”

“I hear another day a press conference from some coaching staff in another national team and (they) say, `OK, if we say we are going to win, we are showing too much arrogance,’” he explained. “If we say, well, it is going to be difficult to win. It’s negative. It’s not optimistic. It’s creating negative things. What I am saying: I am here because I believe that we can win and what I can tell to the people is really believe,” added the USMNT coach.

“We need to send the right energy and good emotion to the people, for the people to really believe in us and to support us, for sure,” Pochettino said.

Key midfielder Tyler Adams will be missing, following his injury in training before Bournemouth’s recent Premier League fixture against Burnley. Tanner Tessmann should continue in midfield, with Sebastian Berhalter, Johnny Cardoso, Aidan Morris, or Cristian Roldan competing to partner him.

Belgium Team News

Despite some key players missing, Belgium have travelled with a strong squad. Thibaut Courtois is not with the squad, so Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels and Manchester United’s Senne Lammens are competing for a start.

Since the era of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen has ended, Belgium have been searching for a strong defensive partnership. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Arthur Theate has started the last three games, and it looks to be more of a question of who will partner him for this game.

Leicester Announce ‘Significant Losses’ From Last Year’s Relegation

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, Leicester’s financial issues have played a massive part in their downfall. Whether it be PSR issues or a lack of cash flow, City aren’t anywhere near their financial stability of pre-pandemic. This wasn’t helped by the unexpected relegation campaign, which further accelerated the downfall. Fast forward to the present day, and the Foxes are fighting for safety in the Championship. With fresh reports coming out about the club’s losses, it’s easy to see why Leicester are in turmoil.

Leicester’s financial losses at the heart of a devastating downfall

Leicester’s Turmoil Explained

As reported by John Percy, City have announced losses of £71.1m. This is the third biggest in the club’s history, with the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons only higher. The two highest losses were around the £90m mark, which highlights the mismanagement over several years. The downfall, of course, came from COVID, but also when the club decided against selling a star player in the summer of 2021. The gamble ultimately didn’t pay off, as it handicapped them in all of the following transfer windows.

However, despite the negative news, the club are confident of avoiding further sanctions for PSR breaches. This is certainly positive news, especially after a six-point deduction led to the relegation battle that they are embroiled in. In addition to this, the accounts don’t include the sales of Mads Hermansen, Kasey McAteer and James Justin. Therefore, next year’s accounts should be stronger as the summer’s fire sale was incredibly necessary.

Looking ahead, fixing this mess is ‘a priority’. Amid the announcement,  Leicester CEO Kevin Davies touched on the issues. He said: “These accounts reflect the reality of returning to the Premier League”. This is, of course, in relation to the need to spend more money to be competitive. During that transfer window, Bilal El Khannouss, Oliver Skipp and Caleb Okoli were among the arrivals, whilst Kiernan Dewsbury Hall was the high-profile exit.

How does this affect Leicester?

In terms of the future, staying in the division will be key. Leicester are currently residing in 22nd place, with just one league victory since January 5th. A return to League One would be catastrophic, especially considering the already high losses. In addition to this, it will be necessary to revamp the squad. Many key figures are set to leave due to higher ambitions or expiring contracts. Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka and Ricardo Pereira are among the list, which means business in the upcoming summer will be key.

It will also be interesting to see how the newly-formed hierarchy can tackle the dismal situation. It will be hard to combat these issues as they transcend a team struggling on the pitch. Supporter apathy, poor business and many other factors seem to be at the root of this turmoil. Even the sacking of managers hasn’t helped in keeping a level of continuity. Steve Cooper, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Marti Cifuentes have all assumed the role and left months later. This can’t be good for creating a project or for their finances. The situation is compounded by limited backing, demotivated players and a fanbase fed up with this decline.

The recent news on season tickets also won’t have helped this ever-rising discontent with the fanbase, as prices will remain the same. Many supporters are likely to give up their season tickets, with little interest from potential new buyers. For a club that was once the envy of Europe, with an owner-fanbase relationship better than anyone, it’s unfortunate to see these results.

Leicester Set For Major Squad Revamp Following Fresh Reports

The current Leicester squad taking to the hallowed turf week in week out are at a new low. They’re devoid of creativity and struggle to defend. Without Jordan James and Abdul Fatawu, it’s hard to imagine where this squad would currently be. It’s no surprise they are 22nd in the league, especially as they are so inconsistent in games. Therefore, it’s easy to see why change is on the horizon.

Abdul Fatawu Heads List of Likely Departures

Time for change

As reported by John Percy, City are returning to their ‘sell a star player’ policy every summer. The likes of Riyad Mahrez, Harry Maguire, Ben Chilwell and Wesley Fofana all departed over several summers, which helped the Foxes with PSR, but also allowed them to make changes to the squad in increments. Though it’s also important to preface that brilliant pieces of business also helped this approach work. However, it came to an end in 2021, when the Foxes opted for an ambitious play in the market. They brought in the then highly-thought-of duo in the form of Boubakary Soumare and Patson Daka, whilst no star departed. This all didn’t pay off when the club missed out on European football for the following season.

However, it seems to be coming back. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was the marquee exit of 2024, and this summer, another star seems set to leave. Percy reported that Fatawu is set to leave, with many admirers ready to pounce. The Ghanaian winger has had an inconsistent campaign, which is to be expected when he is doubled up on most games. Despite this, he’s still shown his quality on plenty of occasions. With 16 goal contributions this season, it’s fair to say he’s done his best with the poor circumstances.

Furthermore, Daka is also set for a move away from the East Midlands. He isn’t expected to receive a new contract, a result that was likely given the player’s struggles this season. The Zambian has found the net just four times this season, and is continuing to struggle in English football. It’s a shame, as there was so much hype when he initially arrived. Over time, he has shown glimpses of the heights he can reach, as seen by the four goals away, against Spartak Moscow. However, it hasn’t worked out, and he now has an opportunity to lead the line elsewhere.

How does this affect Leicester?

Daka’s exit is definitely the right time for both parties to move on. Leicester are crying out for a new centre-forward who is proven and complete. Whilst it is a big ask, it will be interesting to see how the club do act in the transfer window. For the last few seasons, a focal point up top has been missing, which led to the over-reliance on an ageing Jamie Vardy. Now that this period is over, a young, hungry striker could do the club wonders.

As for Fatawu, it’s a surprise to nobody that he could be on his way out. The winger is way too good for this side and will be looking for a move either to the Premier League or across Europe. He has the attributes to make the step up, though his efficiency is questionable. He takes on many audacious efforts, which can come off like the Ipswich halfway line goal, but a lot of the time, it doesn’t. However, it’s key to remember he’s been coming up against several defenders at a time and receives little support or options. In the right environment, he’s the type of profile that could flourish.

Therefore, Fatawu will certainly be missed, but it could open the door to new options. Jake Evans, a talented forward currently playing in League One, could be an option next season. Furthermore, Jeremy Monga may assume a more important role, though he may also depart. The club has talented youngsters that they can lean on, even more so if their possible relegation to League One does come true. Whilst these players aren’t currently at the level of Fatawu, utilising them more or bringing in a more proven wide-man could be the way forward.

Six Golden Tickets, Twelve Contenders: Predictions for the Final World Cup Spots

With UEFA and the FIFA Intercontinental playoffs completing their opening round matches, we’re down to 12 teams seeking six unique tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This is the first time that 48 teams have participated in the tournament. There are four UEFA spots to be settled, and two more globally, with all matches happening on a frantic Tuesday of international football.

UEFA World Cup Playoffs

Italy at Bosnia

The winner of this matchup slots into a winnable group with host nation Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar. Italy saw off Northern Ireland after a dour first half. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean were goalscorers in the 2-0 win where Italy were a defensive wall.

Bosnia didn’t have it so easy, they needed penalty kicks to defeat Wales in Cardiff (1-1 in regular time and 4-2 on kicks). Edin Dzeko, at 40-years-old, is the heart and soul of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dzeko leveled the game in the 86th minute when Bosnia were trailing in a game that Wales were ascendant in during the run of play.

Playing at home at a stadium called the “dragon’s nest”, Bosnia has advantages, but they would be more worn out from their first-round game than the opposition. Italy’s midfield is better and they should create more chances. Bosnia are short in terms of odds, but full of heart and this game could see extra time. Prediction: Italy 2 Bosnia 1

Poland at Sweden

Sweden’s horrific World Cup qualifying effort may not matter if Graham Potter can steer this talented team to a home win against a brave Poland side. Viktor Gyokeres from Arsenal jumped all over Ukraine in the first round, while Poland needed goals from Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski to complete a comeback win over Albania in Warsaw. Gyokeres vs Lewandowski is one of the best striker matchups in the world. Sweden’s XI looks stronger on paper and they’ll want to open the game up more. Playing at home, Sweden are not heavy favorites, but they are favorites. The winner is placed into a group with Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia. Prediction: Sweden 3 Poland 2

Turkey at Kosovo

The host US Men’s national team will know their final group stage opponent when this matchup i settled. Group C has the winner of this match plus USA, Paraguay, and Australia. This Balkans battle sees Kosovo a game away from reaching their first ever World Cup as an independent nation. Slovakia, despite having more shots and dominating the run of play, lost 4-3 to Kosovo, who were absolutely clinical despite trailing 2-1 at one point. It was a thrilling matchup and Kosovo plays lively football.

Turkey’s (Turkiye) 1-0 win over Romania was not as thrilling but it was respectable for a nation that believes their XI is good enough to be a solid World Cup team. Turkey will look to slow the game down while Kosovo wants to push the tempo. Kosovo’s backline will concede chances to Arda Guler and company. Even away, it’s hard to go against the team Turkey has built. Prediction: Turkey 2 Kosovo 0

Denmark at Czech Republic

Denmark’s second half domination of North Macedonia at home gives them tons of momentum heading into this game in the Czech Republic. While Denmark were 4-0 flying winners, Czech Republic (Czechia) needed penalty kicks to slip past an Ireland team that was again heartbroken in the search for the World Cup. Czechia came back from 2-0 down against Ireland, with Ladislav Krejci getting a corner in in the 85th minute. Czechia could be a bit tired for this game and regardless Denmark look like the superior team, despite being away from home. The winner is placed in a group with Mexico, the hosts, South Africa, and South Korea. Prediction: Denmark 2, Czech Republic 1

FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs

Bolivia vs Iraq (in Monterrey, Mexico)

Local Mexican fans have adopted their South American amigos, Bolivia, as “their” team for this FIFA Intercontinental playoff. That lead to raucous celebrations and entertaining scenes in and around Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, as Bolivia were comeback winners 2-1 over Suriname on Thursday. In front of 33,547 fans, the largest group being from Bolivia. Moises Paniagua scored a great goal in the 72nd to tie the game, the teenager from Santos in Brazil, Miguelito was the hero, converting a penalty to give Bolivia the margin of victory. Bolivia’s backline was pressed at time, their squad is a bit limited, but there’s some great energy around this team at the moment.

Iraq under Graham Arnold have spent this time training after an ongoing war in the Middle East impeded their travel and preparations, they will seek to play a physical game, and they are the higher ranked team, but Bolivia has more support in the stands and looks very comfortable in Monterrey. Neither team has a genuine superstar, but when this game is over they will have a new national football hero based on the outcome.

The winner of this path takes on France, Norway, and Senegal in a tough World Cup group.

Prediction: Bolivia 2 Iraq 1

Jamaica vs DR Congo (in Guadalajara, Mexico)

Jamaica only managing to score a lone goal to beat New Caledonia 1-0, was enough to advance, but really undermined their confidence heading into the game against DR Congo. Despite low expectations, the OFC Side New Caledonia made Jamaica stress throughout the 90 minute semifinal. Jamaica can’t afford to squander chances against a much better DR Congo side. This DR Congo side will look for set pieces to impose their ambition, and the CONCACAF region looks weak based on recent results. The winner of this path takes on Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan. Prediction: DR Congo 1 Jamaica 0

Scotland vs Japan Team News and Predicted Lineups

International football returns to Hampden Park as Scotland hosts Japan in what promises to be a competitive friendly. Steve Clarke’s side will be looking to use this fixture to build on their six-match unbeaten run, while Japan haven’t won in their last three, though they have a reputation as a technical squad with fluid attacking play. With both managers keen to strike the right balance between experimentation and stability, this clash offers plenty to watch.

Scotland will be missing winger Ben Gannon-Doak, but Scott McTominay and  John McGinn return to the side after injury layoffs. After qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, Scotland manager Steve Clarke had this to say during his pre-match press conference:

“The last time we qualified, I still had my playing boots on”

The Scots come into this game after winning eight of their last 12 matches and being unbeaten in the last six, but they are winless in their last 10 home games, an unwanted streak that dates back to 2016. A record that The Scots will be hoping to break during this international break.

The Samurai Blue scored 51 goals in their 16 games in Asian qualifying, conceding just three as they smashed their way through qualification. Japan’s star man Kaoru Mitoma had this to say ahead of Saturday’s game:

“I think we’ve certainly made people take notice by becoming the fastest nation to qualify, but if we want to take that next step, there are still a lot of things we need to do”

How the Championship Run-In Looks for Oxford United

Oxford United have given themselves a fighting chance of Championship survival in recent weeks but face seven more tough battles to decide their fate.

Despite defeat against Southampton last time out, the U’s picked up wins over West Brom, Preston and Blackburn before a draw at home against Charlton.

These results have kept Matt Bloomfield’s side within touching distance of safety but there is still plenty of work to do in the final seven games.

Read More: Three Talking Points as Oxford United Lose at Southampton

Oxford United: How the Closing Stages Look for Championship Survival

Hull City (H)

Prediction 1-1

Oxford United return from the international break with a tricky test against promotion-chasing Hull on Good Friday.

The Tigers picked up their customary win over Sheffield Wednesday last time out but have lost against promotion rivals Ipswich and Millwall and, more importantly for Bloomfield’s side, against struggling West Brom.

The U’s have lost their last two meetings against the Yorkshire club but did win when the sides last met at Grenoble Road. Either way, points on home soil is a must and a draw may be enough, with Portsmouth and Blackburn on the road at Norwich and Birmingham respectively, while the Baggies welcome Wrexham. Leicester have arguably the easiest fixture with a home game against Preston.

Portsmouth (A)

Prediction 0-1

Easter Monday is a corker with the current bottom six all facing off against each other, so this could be a significant matchday in terms of Championship survival.

The U’s travel to the south coast to face out-of-form Portsmouth, with John Mousinho’s side without a win in six, which includes five defeats. The most recent of those losses came at QPR with a 6-1 loss in West London.

As mentioned, Pompey travel to Norwich on Good Friday so it could be another tricky test. However, Oxford have failed to win against the south coast club in eight meetings.

Elsewhere, Leicester have the easiest fixture again (on paper) with a trip to already relegated Sheffield Wednesday, while Blackburn and West Brom meet at Ewood Park, with a winner there looking the most likely to move clear of the bottom three.

Watford (H)

Prediction 1-1

The U’s then return to Grenoble Road when Watford are the visiting side. The Hornets are out of sorts and their last three results epitomise that – losing against Stoke, winning against Wrexham and drawing with Leicester, so it will be interesting to see what team turns up.

Like against Hull, a point could be enough but results elsewhere will have enough effect, and they all face tricky tests.

West Brom and Portsmouth face the automatic promotion-chasing duo of Millwall and Middlesbrough, while Blackburn and Leicester, like Watford, face inconsistent sides in Stoke and Swansea.

Portsmouth then use their game in hand card when they finally welcome Ipswich for their rearranged fixture. Of course, it’s a tough game with Ipswich looking to secure a top-two finish.

Derby (A)

Prediction 1-1

Oxford then face two tricky fixtures against sides chasing the playoffs, with Derby up first. A trip to Pride Park awaits where the U’s are unbeaten on their last two visits.

However, the Rams are a different proposition these days with John Eustace’s side aiming for the top six and that target could still be realistic by the time this fixture rolls around.

Preston travel to West Brom while Blackburn have the difficult task of a visit from league leaders, Coventry. Portsmouth welcome Leicester in a huge six-pointer at Fratton Park.

Wrexham (H)

Prediction 1-1

The next tricky fixture is at home against Wrexham who, at the time of writing, are outside the playoffs on goal difference. However, the Hollywood story remains on course with the Welsh club looking to secure their fourth promotion in as many seasons.

Oxford lost the reverse fixture at the Racecourse Ground and will want their penultimate home game of the season to be a good one as they look to avoid the drop.

Coventry are in action against a bottom-six side for the second week running when they host Pompey, while Blackburn are also on the road at Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United. West Brom and Leicester both have home games against Watford and Hull, respectively.

Sheffield Wednesday (H)

Prediction 2-0

The penultimate weekend of football gives, on paper at least, Oxford the easiest chance to gain all three points.

The U’s welcome Sheffield Wednesday and victory could go a long way to secure Championship status.

Leicester and West Brom are also at home but face tricky ties against Millwall and Ipswich, while Portsmouth travel to Stoke and Blackburn visit Southampton.

If all five clubs are still in danger by the time these fixtures roll around, Oxford could put themselves in a good position ahead of the final game of the campaign.

Millwall (A)

Prediction 2-1

While the U’s have the prettiest fixture beforehand, the final round of games is tricky reading for Bloomfield’s side.

Oxford travel to Millwall who could either find themselves still in a fight for the top two or, more likely, be preparing for their playoff campaign to begin.

One positive to take with the latter is that the U’s saw off Sheffield United and Sunderland with those in the playoff positions last season, although both fixtures did come at home. However, the U’s can take confidence having won on their last visit to the Den.

That said, West Brom can chip in their Sheffield Wednesday voucher at Hillsborough while Portsmouth welcome Birmingham. There is also a mouthwatering clash at Ewood Park as Blackburn host Leicester, which could go either way.

Will Oxford United Survive?

Now that’s the question. Based on our prediction, which of course could be completely inaccurate, Oxford would pick up ten points from the final sevens game, taking Matt Bloomfield’s side to 49 points.

Bloomfield’s Luton went down on that number last season although Hull survived on goal difference. Former U’s boss Gary Rowett took Birmingham down on 50 points the season before.

It may not be enough but with the bottom six facing each other during the run-in, some could pull away while others could get dragged back down. Either way, it’s an exciting proposition to come.
