Four of Europe’s big five football leagues have strong title races as the 2025-26 domestic season reaches the halfway point at the start of the New Year. The conclusion to this season across Europe, ahead of the 2026 World Cup, could produce some of the most thrilling domestic trophy battles that we’ve seen this decade. The theme of European football this season in the top leagues is parity and competition, but the question remains when the contenders and pretenders will separate in the table, and the title races will remain contested into the final matchdays or if clear champions will emerge by spring. Here is your look at the state of La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 before the winter transfer window.
Five Italian Teams Stake Claim to Serie A Leadership
The 2025-26 season is one of parity, after Napoli won the 2024-25 title by just one point over Inter Milan, the current table sees five teams with a credible claim to league leadership. Inter Milan sit top, 33 points and the largest goal differential in Italy, they are closely followed by their rivals AC Milan on 32 points, Napoli has 31, with Roma and Juventus rounding out the top 5 on 30 and 29 points respectively. Curiously, neither Inter nor Roma have had a draw this season, it’s been feast or famine, while AC Milan only has one loss.
What’s been working this season for Inter is goal scoring, Lautaro Martinez already has 8 goals ahead of a big World Cup with Argentina, he has quickly become one of Inter’s all time greats, while Turkish player Hakan Çalhanoğlu has 6 goals, and his Turkish national team teammate, Kenan Yildiz has scored 5 times for Juventus and added 4 assists to carry the team.
AC Milan’s best player is arguably the US Men’s national team star Christian Pulisic with 7 goals alongside Portugal’s Rafael Leao with 5. They did win their derby clash against Inter with a Pulisic goal, and also have a league win over Napoli in September where Pulisic scored the decisive goal.
Inter Milan’s Burden
Inter was recently eliminated in the Supercoppa Italia (won by Napoli), and the club carries the dual burden of also competing for Champions League glory after defeat in the final last year against PSG. Juventus and Napoli by contrast have been middling in the Champions League at present and the same could be said of Roma’s Europa League campaign.
Roma’s defensively sound but low scoring football may not be sustainable though Serbian goalkeeper Mile Svilar has been fantastic. Napoli and AC Milan believe this is their moment though Napoli are without key veteran Kevin De Bruyne. AC Milan have been boosted by the addition of veteran leader Luka Modric. Inter Milan’s squad has rejuvenated a bit after the disappointments last year under new manager Cristian Chivu. The challenge for Inter Milan is they haven’t looked their best when facing other title contenders and dropping points against direct rivals could decide the league.
Could PSG Lose Ligue 1?
PSG recently claimed the FIFA Intercontinental Title, they are defending their Champions League title and they reached the final of the Club World Cup, but all of the matches played may be taking their toll on one of the best sides French football has ever season. The Ligue 1 standings at the winter break have Lens on 37 points, with PSG trailing in second at 36, Marseille and Lille round out the teams above 30 points, with 32 points each. Lyon, which is set to add Real Madrid’s Endrick on loan, sit 5th on 27 points.
PSG’s record in the league is not poor, 11-3-2 is perfectly respectable most seasons, but Lens have been remarkable compiling a 12-1-3 record and conceding just 13 goals in 16 games. In over 100 years as a club, Lens has only won the Ligue 1 one time (1997-98), if they sustain this record and finish above PSG it would be a remarkable achievement. given PSG last lost the league title in 2020-21.
While PSG and Marseille, with the largest budgets in French football, were expected to be contending, Lens has a market value per Transfermarkt that is 10% of PSG’s. What’s a success for Lens under Pierre Sage is the dual attack of veteran Wesley Said and Odsonne Edouard. Another revelation has been the revival of French national team midfielder Florian Thauvin. Thauvin was a key piece at Marseille before fading from relevance a bit at Tigres UANL in Mexico and Udinese in Italy. 21-year-old goalkeeper Robin Risser is also a name to watch.
PSG Remains Confident
What will give PSG confidence is their 2-0 win over Lens in September. The club look set for another deep Champions League run, but they have the squad depth to manage both obligations in 2026. Luis Enrique is still managing one of the world’s best squads that has depth in terms of goal scoring options, with young players like Ibrahim Mbaye, currently at AFCON, coming into their own.
Marseille’s Mason Greenwood has 11 league goals this season and has carried this squad to another Champions League level finish. They also finally managed a league win over PSG, though the current Champions League campaign has them just 16th.
Lille have a balanced and slightly unheralded squad, Felix Correia, a 24-year-old Portuguese midfielder, leads them in G+A contributions, Turkish goalkeeper Berke Ozer has been solid as well. The question remains whether PSG will go on a run and break out in the Ligue 1 title race again, or if anyone else, mainly Lens or Marseille or Lille can sustain pressure on them. Lens winning the league would be Leicester City winning the Premier League level triumph.
Bayern Munich Seems Inevitable in the Bundesliga
Germany’s Bundesliga has the least interesting title race of the big 5, Bayern Munich are undefeated on 41 points, Borussia Dortmund, despite only losing once this season, has been left in stalemates frequently and sit at 32 points with Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig rounding out the top 4 on 29 points.
Bayern Munich have scored an absurd 55 league goals this season, and at 5-0-1 they have been fantastic in the Champions League as well. Only injuries or a severe slump in form would take away Bayern’s belief they are the best club in Europe presently. The trident of Harry Kane (22 goals+assists), Michael Olise (15), and Luis Diaz (14) are scoring for fun, ahead of World Cup participation for all three players.
Dortmund once again lacks the squad depth and consistency to challenge for a title based on current form but they are set to reach the knockout phase of the Champions League, sitting 10th after 6 matches. After missing European football, RB Leipzig are rejuvenated, while Leverkusen have rebuilt after significant squad sales. The Bundesliga table in the Spring is likely to be about European places, rather than a title chase.
El Clasico Set To Decide La Liga Once More
This season is a familiar script in La Liga, it’s Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona battling for the league title. So far this season it’s FC Barcelona with the upper hand, at 15-1-2 and the firepower of 51 goals (a +31 goal differential), Hansi Flick’s squad is overcoming any concerns about depth to simply blitz past the opposition.
Real Madrid are on 42 points and frustrated, the four point deficit to Barcelona more than a game of difference and that gap matches the exact points difference between the teams at the end of 2024-25. Atletico Madrid on 37 points appear set to finish in the Champions League positions once more but they haven’t won enough to challenge for a title.
The key date? May 10th when Barcelona hosts Real Madrid at their new stadium. The October 26th El Clasico produced a 2-1 win for Real Madrid at home but since that time, Barcelona found another gear in La Liga play, while Xabi Alonso came under criticism for defeat against Celta Vigo and a pair of draws against lowly Rayo Vallecano and Elche.
Barcelona are undefeated in La Liga since losing to Real Madrid, they regularly score 2+ goals a game and were untroubled by Champions League side Villarreal in their last outing. There’s a perception that Flick is maximizing his Barca squad, while Alonso hasn’t done the same with Real Madrid.
Hansi Flick vs Xabi Alonso Down The Stretch
Barcelona‘s trident is familiar, the wonderkid Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Raphinha from Brazil have combined for 36 goals+assists, loanee Marcus Rashford from Manchester United has been a huge contributor with 8 goals+assists and nifty play, while the ageless Robert Lewandowski is still a goalscoring threat.
The defence, which is missing players like Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen due to injury remains a concern but 24-year-old Joan Garcia feels like a long-term, reliable solution in goal.
For Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe is the clear superstar with 22 goals+assists, but Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham haven’t always found ways to play well with him. Young Turkish midfielder Arda Guler is a budding star as well. With Mbappe the long-term leader of the attack, the question remains whether Madrid will try to move on from Vinicius Jr.
If this level of competition holds into the spring, the run-in to the 2026 World Cup may also mark one of the most compelling domestic seasons European football has seen in years.
