Since the start of their return to the second tier, Leicester City’s woes have continued to haunt them. Whether it be the loss of several key players or disappointing performances, the Foxes have struggled to emulate their success of 25 months ago. They currently sit in sixth place, following four successive draws. Although promotion is still on the cards, could this new report be a warning sign?
New Report Suggests Further Warning Signs For Leicester City

As reported by John Percy, a new legal saga could affect the club’s ongoing Championship campaign. Legal issues and battles with PSR aren’t new for City, as in September 2024, they won their appeal over breaches. This could have led to a Premier League points deduction if not for the work of lawyer Nick De Marco. However, this time around, the Foxes could succumb to their punishment as the Premier League continue to hunt for further ramifications.

Among the new updates, a conclusion may not be final until 2026, which could become impactful later in the season. The three charges Leicester face became public back in May, as they remain under threat of a points deduction, fine or transfer ban. These errors include losses of £200 million, failing to provide accounts by the deadline, whilst also not assisting the Premier League with the information correctly.
Percy adds that the financial problems can “arguably” be traced back to the summer of 2021, when the Foxes’ attempt to solidify themselves as a top side failed. Following their inaugural FA Cup win, signing a number of talents like Ryan Bertrand, Patson Daka, and Boubakary Soumare.
However, the signings didn’t work out, and with no first-team sales that year, the financial situation deteriorated. Not to mention the fact that they also failed to qualify for Europe, as they finished eighth and lost to Roma in the semi-finals of the Conference League.
How Does This Affect Leicester City?
With such major problems off the pitch, it is no surprise that the on-field product is also struggling. The Foxes have now faced two relegations from the top division in their last four years, and this season already suggests even more challenges are on the horizon. Marti Cifuentes came into the hot seat halfway through pre-season, which left him with considerably less time to prepare. In addition, the club have only spent £2 million this calendar year, a figure which clearly highlights the financial predicament.

Susan Whelan has also recently stepped down as Chief Executive after 15 years at the club, following relations with Director of Football John Rudkin souring. It’s clear there are many challenges, and this could all seriously affect the Foxes’ chances of promotion. Khun Top will now assume the role as CEO in Whelan’s place, and with fan discontent continuing to soar, could these issues spiral?

It’s been well-reported that King Power have struggled since the COVID-19 pandemic. The problems faced by the Thai business have simultaneously coincided with the football club’s woes, as both parties faced huge losses in 2023. The death of Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha back in 2018 is something that certainly also affected both situations, as it was his leadership that brought the success of both King Power and Leicester City. With Top at the helm, and challenges continuing to arise, it’s safe to say the Foxes are unlikely to revive the glory of the 2010s any time soon.
