How Scotland Have Lined-up Recently
In the June international break, Scotland played two matches, lining up in a 5-4-1 in the first and a 4-4-2 in the second. Against Iceland, Angus Gunn started in goal, but had to go off after seven minutes, leading to Ross Doohan starting against Liechtenstein. Andy Robertson was the only constant in the back-line.
Kieran Tierney, Grant Hanley, and John Souttar started as centre-backs in the first match, with Scott McKenna and Jack Hendry doing so in the second. Max Johnston and Anthony Ralston battled it out at right-back.

Billy Gilmour, John McGinn, and Lewis Ferguson all featured in the midfield four in both matches, with Lennon Miller coming in for the injured Scott McTominay against Liechtenstein. The Aston Villa captain moved from central midfield to the left flank to accommodate this change.
Up top, Ipswich striker George Hirst was the solo striker in their first fixture, and was joined by Che Adams in the second. Adams went on to score a hat-trick and grab an assist in a spectacular performance.
Scotland’s Recent Form
Scotland’s match against Iceland was met with a “chorus of booing” after a 3-1 defeat at Hampden Park to FIFA’s 74th-ranked side. In fairness, two of the goals conceded were down to individual errors, and one of which was caused by substitute goalkeeper, Cieran Slicker, just seconds into his debut. However, the team’s performance was uninspired regardless.

The side bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein – a team that, in the last year, have been on the wrong end of San Marino’s only two competitive wins ever.
Scotland Injuries and Absentees to Consider
Celtic full-backs Tierney and Ralston have both pulled out of the national team squad ahead of these qualifiers, despite being called up and playing against rivals Rangers over the weekend. The loss of Tierney will be the more impactful, though unsurprising given his injury record. With the 28-year-old out, Steve Clarke may be forced into a back-four again.
