Projected Leicester Squad for 2026/27

Leicester City Player With ‘Commitment Questioned’ Linked With Move to Championship Rivals

In the summer of 2023, Conor Coady joined Leicester City from Wolves, ahead of an important Championship campaign. Two years later, and the centre-back has appeared just 34 times in the league for City. With the lack of gametime, poor rapport with the fans, and questions about whether he suits Cifuentes’ system, it looks like Coady could be on his way out from the Foxes.

Leicester City Defender Linked With Championship Newcomers Amid Struggles

Conor Coady: Set To Depart?

As reported by Tom Collomosse, the once-capped England defender is a target for Wrexham. The Welsh side gained promotion from the third tier this past April with a 3-0 win against Charlton. With the need to strengthen ahead of the Championship, Coady could be a good option due to his experience.

Collomosse also adds that it is likely a fee will be within the deal, as he comes into the last year of his Foxes contract. It’s no secret that Phil Parkinson’s side have money to spend this summer, as they look close to smashing their club record transfer fee for a third time.

Furthermore, the 32-year-old defender finds the Welsh side’s progress impressive, having been in the National League just two years ago. The vision will be a major factor in the deal as the club believe they can be in the Premier League in just two years time.

How Does This Affect Leicester City

In Marti Cifuentes’ third game in charge against recently promoted Bundesliga side Koln, the centre-back partnership was an issue. Coady and Jannik Vestergaard struggled with the pace and intensity both on and off the ball. Therefore, with younger options like Ben Nelson and Caleb Okoli being available, it would make sense to lose the veteran, who’s seen his “commitment questioned” by fans.

Moreover, City also need to make changes financially this transfer window. As reported yesterday by Jordan Blackwell, players need to depart before new additions can arrive. Therefore, selling the former Wolves defender looks like a way to raise funds, whilst not necessarily losing an integral player.

Wages are also an issue regarding Coady as he joined from Wolves as a marquee signing. The departure of Jamie Vardy and Danny Ward shows a clear intent to reduce the high wage bill, and losing Coady would further help this strategy. Younger players like Olabade Aluko, Jayden Joseph are set to be a big part of the squad and will further help the changes to the wage structure, as experienced stars won’t necessarily be needed.
