Manchester United ‘Weigh Up’ Swap Deal With Chelsea to Offload ‘Disrespectful’ Player

The summer transfer window has well and truly kicked off, as we are now a week into it after a six-day break following on from the Club World Cup’s mini-window. Rumours are circulating as the big teams look to strengthen their squads before the start of the new season; Chelsea and Manchester United are now considering a swap deal for Alejandro Garnacho and Christopher Nkunku.

Manchester United and Chelsea Consider Christopher Nkunku and Alejandro Garnacho Swap Deal

Both Players Want to Leave

Matt Law, of the Telegraph, has revealed that both Manchester United and Chelsea now “weigh up” the pros and cons of deals that would see Garnacho and Nkunku go opposite ways. Reportedly, both players want to leave their clubs. Technically, this would not be an official “swap deal”, but these are rare in football nowadays, and there are often separate transfers that are actually closely linked.

The clubs are “yet to hold direct talks” but neither player has ruled out the prospect of swapping places. The Red Devils want to sell Garnacho, and he would prefer to stay in England; the Argentinian is expected to “jump at the chance to join Chelsea”. It remains to be seen whether both deals are likely to happen, neither, or just one.

Which Transfer Would Be More Successful?

Both clubs are getting players who had a lot of success one or two seasons ago, but have had a slight drop-off since. Nkunku was the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer in 2022/23 but has been plagued by injuries at Chelsea, whilst Garnacho has had off-the-field issues with managers, leading to less gametime and him being called “disrespectful”.

For United, this transfer would make sense, as they currently target reinforcements for their forward line. After scoring the fifth-fewest goals in the division last season, they have already recruited Matheus Cunha for some extra creativity and goal threat. They have also targeted strikers like Viktor Gyokeres, and a more support-like player in Bryan Mbeumo. Nkunku arguably provides both of these solutions, as he can play up-front and be a bagsman, but can also play in the ten and out wide.

Meanwhile for Chelsea, signing another wide player seems odd. Whilst Maresca revealed that he does want another winger after Mykhailo Mudryk’s suspension, they are currently in talks over Jamie Bynoe-Gittens. Meanwhile, still in their squad there are the likes of Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, and Cole Palmer capable of playing wide, plus the arrival of Willian Estevao. Garnacho’s ability to thrive in such a stacked squad will be tested.
