‘Actively Considering’: Manchester United to Rival La Liga Giants for Experienced Bundesliga Defender

United to Face Stiff Competition for Tah

Sky Sports reporter Paul Gilmour has reported that United are now “actively considering” a move to sign the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back in the summer window. The 29-year-old defender’s current contract with the Bundesliga club expires at the end of June (2025) making him a free agent.

However, La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested as are Bayer’s league rivals Bayern Munich, but United have now also positioned themselves as potential contenders for his signing. It’s claimed by Gilmour that Real Madrid could have an added advantage in their hopes of signing the German centre-back if Xabi Alonso takes over as their new manager next season due to the centre-back sharing a strong relationship with the Spanish manager.

Tah, meanwhile, recently confirmed his decision to leave Bayer Leverkusen after the end of the campaign after his side’s recent 1-1 draw against St. Pauli, stating: “Everything was said from the beginning. There was a point when I made the decision not to extend my contract and not to stay here. That’s still the case,”

How Can Tah Fit in at Old Trafford?

The Red Devils might face a challenging task in securing the signing of the Germany international, but he can add a lot of steel and assurance to their backline. Tah is well accustomed to playing in a three centre-back formation, having played under Alonso’s system in the Bundesliga.

That is why he could be an asset for Ruben Amorim, who has stuck with his 3-4-3 formation ever since taking up the reins as Manchester United’s head coach. The 29-year-old defender is a highly experienced player who has starred for Bayer Leverkusen since 2015 making 399 appearances. This season he has made 46 appearances for the German club so far this season, helping them keep 16 clean sheets. Tah would certainly add more sturdiness to the Red Devils’ backline if they are able to sign him.
