Barcelona ‘Wonderkid’ Set to Stay Amid European Interest After Injuries

Barcelona became unbeaten in nine fixtures at the weekend with a win over Deportivo Alaves, in a victory that strengthens their bid for the title. The Spanish giants seem back to their best in recent weeks and want to keep their strong squad depth by retaining youngster Pablo Torre.

FC Barcelona to Keep Pablo Torre Despite Interest From FC Porto

Why Would Porto Be Interested?

It was revealed today that Manchester City had signed Porto’s Nico Gonzalez. Therefore, this will see Porto’s options in the central roles significantly decreased unless they make a signing.

In addition to this, Torre provides versatility as he has played off either wing at times but mostly through the centre. The Spaniard’s impressive passing stats make it no surprise that the Portuguese side is interested in him.

However, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barcelona want to keep the 21-year-old starlet. This is said to have been a request of manager Hansi Flick, who clearly sees the playmaker in his future plans. As a result, Porto are immediately exploring new options to strengthen their bid for the Liga Portugal title.

What Is Next for Pablo Torre?

So far this season, Torre has played just twelve games, with five of the appearances being starts. In this time, he has managed to accumulate a combined tally of seven goals and assists, which is impressive given his limited opportunities. This shows that the midfielder is talented but is yet to solidify himself in Flick’s starting eleven given the quality in each position. Therefore, a loan move would have made sense for game time.

The lack of minutes could decrease even further with the likes of Dani Olmo also returning from injury soon. But given the injury record of Gavi, who was sidelined after less than 15 minutes yesterday, the German coach may see Torre as a good squad option and backup.

Therefore, a move away for more minutes may have been the right option but if injuries come up then Torre could be more than ready to fill in. He is another key part of the Barcelona project, with young players like Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi and Marc Casado all excelling this season. Torre could follow in his peers’ footsteps this season and the experience gained around world-class players will be vital.
