Fabrizio Romano has reported that Pep Guardiola’s side have agreed a deal with FC Porto for the signing of the Spanish midfielder on the transfer deadline day. He also states that the Cityzens have agreed to pay the same amount as his release clause, around £49.8 million for the 23-year-old, but will pay the amount in a different structure than paying it all in one single payment.

The journalist has also noted that Gonzalez has been given the green light to travel to Manchester for his medical tests before he can complete the move. He also indicates that the “contract signing (is) soon” as the Spanish midfielder hurries to complete a move to play under Guardiola for the Premier League giants.
How Can Nico Gonzalez Fit In At Manchester City?
Manchester City have been quite proactive in strengthening their squad during the 2025 winter transfer window. They splurged big bucks to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt to bolster their forward line, and have also improved their backline for the long term with the signings of young centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

But it seems that Guardiola wants more options in his midfield line and is eyeing the possible signing of a former Barcelona midfielder and La Masia product. Before joining FC Porto, Gonzalez came up through the La Liga side’s academy and made 37 appearances for the senior team as well.
The 23-year-old is a versatile midfielder, who can play anywhere in midfield and mostly excels in that no.8 position. He has scored seven goals and provided six assists in 29 appearances for FC Porto this season, producing some energetic performances, and will add more variety to Manchester City’s midfield with this new chapter.
