Liverpool’s 2024 ‘Hero’ Makes Public Transfer Request After New Summer Signing

Liverpool Predicted Lineup Vs Crystal Palace for October 5

Liverpool are soaring in the early part of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, having won all of their first three matches under Arne Slot. However, it appears that there are certain tensions being shared with their number two goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who is eager to leave as soon as possible.

What Did He Say About His Ambitions?

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has publicly spoken about his desire for a new experience in his career after failing to become a regular starter at Anfield due to the brilliance of Alisson Becker. He recently featured for the Republic of Ireland side that lost to Lee Carsley’s England side in the UEFA Nations League.

However, ahead of the next game against Greece, Kelleher made it clear that he hopes to leave Liverpool soon and stated: “I made it clear in the last few years, I want to go be a No. 1 and play week in, week out. The club made the decision to get another goalkeeper. From the outside looking in, it looks like they have made a decision to go in another direction.”

“My ambition has always been clear the last few seasons that I want to be a No. 1, playing week in week out. Sometimes from the outside looking in, it looks like it is 100% my decision but at times it is not always in my hands.”

Why Is Caoimhin Kelleher Looking to Leave Liverpool?

Kelleher has been at Liverpool since 2015, having initially joined their youth academy at the age of 17 from Ringmohan Rangers. He made his first-team debut for the Reds in the 2019/20 season, but has found it near impossible to be a regular presence in their team due to how well Alisson has been performing all throughout the years.

Liverpool signed a new goalkeeper in Giorgio Mamardashvili this summer, with the Georgian no.1 set to join next year. That likely compelled Kelleher to want to leave even further as it looks like Mamardashvili will be Liverpool’s long-term goalkeeper for years to come. The Irish star has made 47 competitive appearances for the Reds and kept 15 clean sheets. Last season, when Alisson missed 14 games, Kelleher was the “hero”, playing a huge role in the EFL Cup Final victory, keeping Liverpool in the title race, and surviving important knockout fixtures in the Europa League and the FA Cup.
