Desire from Both Parties to Complete a Deal

The report from The Athletic confirms no agreement is in place, but both clubs are in discussions over a deal for the £120,000 per weekIt’s also mentioned that there is a desire to complete the transfer despite many moving parts. Both clubs face difficulties with their transfer plans due to financial constraints. The Magpieshave a profit and sustainability (PSR) shortfall they must comply with by June 30. As The Athletic previously reported, Yankuba Minteh looks the most likely asset to offload and comply with this shortfall. The St James’ Park club will have the capacity to spend again in July as 2024-25 represents a fresh 12 months in the three-year rolling PSR cycle.

Everton PSR Concerns and Calvert-Lewin Form

Everton also have PSR worries, having breached rules in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. The Merseyside club do not want to sell their best players, but an offer for a striker who has struggled with injuries in the past could prove too hard to reject. The England international enjoyed an impressive end to the season, which saw him finish the campaign with eight goals and three assists, helping Everton to Premier League survival.

His 38 appearances in all competitions last season seem to suggest his injury problems are behind him, and with Callum Wilson entering the last year of his deal with a poor injury record – it could be one-in, one-out at St James’ Park this summer.
