How Bayern Munich Have Lined Up Recently

Bayern started their historic defeat to 1. FC Heidenheim at the weekend with Sven Ulreich in goal. Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies as the outside backs, while Dayot Upamecano and Min-jae Kim returned to the lineup as centre-backs. Konrad Laimer played in the holding midfield role next to Leon Goretzka, as Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane made up the front four.

That means that there were three changes made to the starting lineup compared to the previous match. Namely, Upamecano and Kim replaced Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt as the centre back pairing, which proved to be a disastrous mistake. Meanwhile, Gnabry replaced the injured Leroy Sané to good effect, with an assist on Kane’s opener and by scoring the second himself.

Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics

The team’s form is extremely concerning going into the Arsenal match. First, there was the hapless 2-0 loss at home to Dortmund, then came the total collapse in the second half of the Heidenheim match. This was the first time ever in the Bundesliga history that the Bavarians blew a 2-0 halftime lead, to lose to a promoted team.

It is no exaggeration to say that anytime Bayern lose two or more consecutive games, it is considered a full-blown crisis at the club. The fact that this is the second time that that has happened in recent months, shows what an unusual position the team are in.

But despite that, there is still an opportunity to reach the semifinals of Europe’s elite club competition. Tactically, there is not much need to change things. The 4-2-3-1 formation is what these players are used to and are able to play well. The problem is that few in the squad are reaching their full potential week in week out. They are not playing at or even near the level that they are capable of.

Bayern Munich Injuries to Consider

In the last training session before their flight to London on Monday, most players participated. That includes Manuel Neuer, Noussair Mazraoui, Alekandar Pavlovic, Sané and Kingsley Coman. That means that only Bouna Sarr and Sacha Boey are left on the injury list. The question of how long particularly Pavlovic, Sané and Coman are able to last on the pitch is this a different one however.
