Manchester United have so far not signed a new striker to boost their attack, but it seems that their attention might have been turned by the possible emergence of an experienced forward in Callum Wilson.

United Could Face Competition For Callum Wilson

The Evening Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella claims that the Red Devils are one of the clubs to have been “alerted” by the availability of the Newcastle United striker heading into the final week of the 2024 January transfer window. He adds that the Magpies could end up selling the experienced striker for a price of just £18 million in the winter transfer window.

With that being said, Kinsella states that Chelsea and Arsenal are also monitoring Wilson’s situation as they’re also looking to sign a new striker before the end of the window. It is further claimed that Newcastle are in need of raising money through player sales to stay in line with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules after spending around £400 million since the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund took over as their owners in 2021. This comes after the Magpies reportedly rejected Bayern Munich’s advances to sign Kieran Trippier.

Can United Benefit From Wilson Signing?

The Red Devils have focused on offloading players in the winter window, loaning Jadon Sancho to Borussia Dortmund for the rest of the season and allowing Hannibal Mejbri to join Sevilla to get regular game-time. However, they could actually look to sign a new striker in January after confirming that Anthony Martial will be out for around ten weeks after undergoing groin surgery.

Wilson could be a solid short-term option for Erik ten Hag’s side, which has scored the fewest goals of any top-10 Premier League side so far this season. The 31-year-old has plenty of experience playing in the Premier League, having scored 86 goals and provided 23 assists in 215 appearances. He has even scored seven goals in the league this season, which is more than any Red Devils forward has managed – and for £18 million, the Englishman – who was previously described as “brilliant” by his current manager can be a value-for-money forward who increases their goal-scoring threat.
