“Gigantic” Player Injured: Newcastle United Predicted Lineup Vs Dortmund

Newcastle United travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund at the famously hostile Signal Iduna Park. The Champions League fixture takes place on November 7, with the victor taking provisional second place in Group F. This is the Newcastle United predicted lineup.

How Newcastle Have Lined-up Recently

Despite some critics questioning Nick Pope’s ability, the England international has been Newcastle’s number one in all Champions League and Premier League matches this season.

Bar a heavily rotated side in the EFL Cup, the back-four has remained as follows in recent matches: Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Jamaal Lascelles, and Kieran Trippier (left to right). Lascelles has worn the armband and maintained a spot in the starting lineup, although this is merely due to the absence of the injured Sven Botman.
In the centre of the midfield three is arguably Newcastle’s most important player in Bruno Guimarães. Joelinton has started recent games, alongside one of the most surprising players of the season: Sean Longstaff.
On the wings, Eddie Howe has played Miguel Almirón and Anthony Gordon. The latter of which has also featured down the middle in the EFL Cup, and even in the final 30 minutes against Arsenal – during which he scored the winner. At striker, Callum Wilson has thrived with Alexander Isak injured.

Newcastle Recent Form and Tactics

Newcastle have just completed back-to-back wins, both against respectable opposition. In midweek, Howe’s side beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup. Significantly, it was an extremely rotated side and yet looked just as competent as the normal eleven. The 45-year-old’s tactics are clearly being implemented effectively throughout the entire squad.

Most recently, the Magpies beat Arsenal 1-0 at St. James’ Park. Not only was the result positive, but the performance backed it up; Mikel Arteta’s side were outplayed, with the Toon Army spurring on Howe’s men. The Gunners were limited to just one shot on target and had an XG of just 0.57. Defensively, Newcastle must be praised, for blocking nine of Arsenal’s shots: the most against the side this season.

During the victory, Howe set up his wingers to quickly track back and help the full-backs defend. This created a 2v1 situation for Arsenal’s wide-men, and the threat was successfully neutralised: Bukayo Saka had just three touches inside the box, compared to a league average of eight this season.

Newcastle and Dortmund faced each other in their most recent Champions League fixture, on October 25. The match ended 1-0 in favour of Edin Terzić and his charges. A draw was perhaps more deserved, however, with Wilson and Gordon both hitting the woodwork in the final 10 minutes and three big chances being missed throughout the match.

Newcastle Injuries to Consider

The victory at the weekend may be slightly overshadowed by yet another first-team injury. Burn was substituted at half-time with a spinal injury that he obtained earlier in the game.  Howe has now revealed that he will be facing “a couple of months out”. The manager followed this up by explaining how the defender has been “gigantic” for the side this season, and that it will be a “huge blow”.

This unfortunately comes less than a week after Newcastle’s second-choice left-back, Matt Targett, picked up a hamstring injury. The English manager stated that the 28-year-old will “definitely be out for around three months”.

Interestingly, Tino Livramento replaced Burn against Arsenal; the 20-year-old played at right-back with Trippier moving to the left-hand side. Following a man-of-the-match performance in the EFL Cup, it seems likely that he will feature against Dortmund.

Aside from the latest injuries, the Magpies face an abundance of unavailable players. To exacerbate the loss of the two left-backs, fellow defender Botman remains out for an unknown period of time.

On the wings, Jacob Murphy re-injured his shoulder against Arsenal, and Harvey Barnes remains out until the New Year. Up front, Isak is out for a few weeks but fortunately, Wilson is fit. Sandro Tonali is of course suspended for the rest of the season.

Despite a copious amount of injuries, it is not expected that Newcastle’s form will dip too significantly. Howe has implemented his style into the entire squad, as demonstrated against Manchester United.

With so many injuries, the squad does not allow for much rotation. Guimarães is expected to start as he will be suspended for the league game against Bournemouth, and Joe Willock is expected to be handed a chance after his impressive cameo against former club Arsenal.
