In an official statement, the club said: “Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for an extended period due to an aggravation of the foot injury he suffered in April. The Argentinian defender experienced the setback in our Premier League game against Arsenal earlier this month. Martinez bravely continued playing for the following two games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Bayern Munich. But it has now been determined that he needs a period on the sidelines for recovery and rehabilitation. Assessment is ongoing to decide the next steps. Everyone at Manchester United sends Lisandro our best wishes and looks forward to him coming back as soon as possible.”

How Long Can Martinez Be Out For?

It appears that the Argentine centre-back could be out for a long time with this latest injury blow. It has been reported that Martinez could be out of action for two to three months, meaning he could be out until Christmas.

Martinez’s injury spell will open up places for the other centre-back in the United squad to prove their quality to Erik ten Hag. With Raphael Varane returning from injury recently, he will likely face competition from Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and summer signing Jonny Evans after he impressed in their win over Burnley. Martinez, who was praised as an “absolute monster” by Luke Shaw last season – was only able to make six appearances in this campaign before his injury.
