Man Utd Defender Unlikely To Leave

Maguire To Stay Despite Transfer Links

The Red Devils defender is now set to continue to fight for his place at the club despite expectations of him leaving this summer. West Ham United looked set to sign the 30-year-old for a fee in the region of £30 million earlier this month, but the deal fell through without an agreement between the club and the player.

With the deal with West Ham collapsing, the club’s pursuit of Benjamin Pavard from Bayern Munich has stalled – as United need to sell before they buy, owing to the Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

Difficult Spell at Man Utd for Harry Maguire

The last 12 months have been difficult for Maguire. The former Leicester man has only started eight Premier League games out of 40 since Erik Ten Hag took charge of United last summer, with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez his preferred partnership at the back.

The England international was also stripped of the club captaincy last month, a decision which he was “extremely disappointed” by. This combined with his lack of playing time, led many to believe he would seek a move elsewhere during this transfer window.

‘Brilliant’ Harry Maguire To Fight For His Place

Despite his recent struggles at Man Utd, Maguire has featured regularly for his country, including starting every one of the matches at the 2022 World Cup.

National team manager Gareth Southgate has defended his selection of the “brilliant” centre-back – but ahead of another likely major international tournament next summer, Maguire will need to justify his place in the side. With Levi Colwill emerging as a left-sided centre-back option due to his form at Chelsea, competition for places is fierce.

Despite being left out of the United squad that faced Spurs last time out, the defender will be aiming for consistent selection in cup games as the club battles on domestic and continental fronts. According to the report from Luckhurst, his United teammate Eric Bailly, who was “resentful of Maguire’s privileges two years ago” will likely leave before the end of the transfer window, with Marseille pushing to sign the out of favour defender.
