‘Not Available’: Journalist Reports that ‘Best Defender’ Will Stay with His Manchester Club

Varane

Fabrizio Romano posted on Tuesday night that former World Cup winner Raphael Varane will not leave Manchester United during this transfer window. Several Saudi Arabian clubs had been rumoured to be circling his position, but the Frenchman will stay in the Premier League this window.

What Romano Said

The Italian journalist stated that Varane “has never been in contact with Saudi clubs.” A natural centre-back in both height and playing style, the 30-year-old former Real Madrid star has not been looking for a departure in any form this summer.

For United’s part, it seems Erik ten Hag considers Varane to be an essential aspect of the squad, and is not listing him as available for either loan or selling. Having played him in every minute of their opening two matches, Ten Hag is using him as a key defender.

The Red Devils’ Less Than Impressive Start

Varane’s club have gotten off to a lacklustre start. A 1-0 win against Wolves, courtesy of a goal from the defender, was overshadowed by a missed penalty call against new goalkeeper Andre Onana that caused a flurry of backlash against both the officials and the Premier League.

United’s most recent outing was a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite outshooting Spurs, the Red Devils were unable to convert them and their defence, even on Varane’s side of the pitch, showed gaping holes that allowed the North London club to find the back of the net on multiple occasions.

Varane’s Legacy

It is fair to say that the former Champions League winner has already played his best football. A World Cup win with France, coupled with multiple Spanish, European, and world club triumphs with Real had made Varane become a global brand before his Manchester United move.

Since joining the Red Devils, Varane has got them to two cup finals, winning the EFL Cup this past season. Previously dubbed “the best defender” by players and coaches alike, the Frenchman will continue to play football at the highest level, instead of trading it in for the Saudi League.
