USMNT Star Leaving Spanish Champions for Eredivisie Loan

Soccer: Allstate Continental Classico-Mexico at USA With USMNT Defender, Sergino Dest Playing

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano (originally reported by Toni Juanmarti) has given an update on a talented USMNT player that they hope can lead their defence for years to come. Sergino Dest, who can play in either the left or right-back role, has secured a loan deal with Dutch club PSV. Romano also reported that there is an option for the move to be made permanent, which would keep Dest in the Netherlands for as long as he and his new team are able to agree on. Citing Juanmarti, the famed transfer specialist also noted that Barcelona will pay half of Dest’s salary while he is in Eindhoven and that the buy option in the contract is not mandatory.

Return to Eredivisie for Former Ajax Star

This is not Dest’s first time in the European country with a rich footballing heritage. He started his career with Ajax’s reserves before eventually making his way to the senior team. Spending only one full season with the Amsterdam giants, a move to Spain was achieved in 2020, as Barcelona began to utilize the young player’s skills. Born in the Netherlands, Dest made 51 La Liga appearances with Barcelona before eventually falling out of favor, and it was made known to him that time on the field would only come while playing for another club. A loan move to Italian outfit AC Milan did not bring the 22-year-old the joy he was seeking, and so he returned to Barcelona for a brief moment. Now, back where his footballing career took off, Dest has a chance to reinvent himself.

How Dest’s USMNT Stock Increases with Move

Dest is already invaluable for his nation. The defender, who has always chosen to represent the USMNT over the Netherlands, will only see his presence in the team grow with this loan move. Constant playing time, which was denied to him in Milan, will come more easily at PSV. This time on the pitch will help him hone his skills and show coach Gregg Berhalter why he is an essential playmaker for future competitions. Additionally, PSV play Scottish club Rangers in the final round of UEFA Champions League qualifying. The European club championship is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world, and if Dest can both help his new team reach the group stage and shine against elite continental competition, he will boost his career at both the club and national team levels.
