According to Marlon Irlbacher of Sky Germany, Leeds United are set to lose central defender Max Wober due to a loan clause in his contract, with Borussia Monchengladbach in negotiations. Fans have taken to social media, calling the clause “actual arrogance” and asking “what the f*** is this“.

What is the Max Wober Transfer Clause

Although there are relatively few details around the nature of Wober’s contract, journalists stating that the centre-back has a “loan clause” indicates that the Austrian could be in a similar situation to Robin Koch and Brenden Aaronson. Both of these players left on loan thanks to a clause in their contract stating they could do so upon relegation. In the case of Robin Koch, this was the catalyst for a permanent exist, with just one year remaining on his contract.

Why the Leeds United Transfer News is a Blow

This will come as a serious blow to Whites fans because it demonstrates a serious step back in the club’s transfer business. Robin Koch and Diego Llorente have already left the club, for Frankfurt and Roma respectively, and losing Max Wober would leave very few recognised centre-backs at Elland Road. In spite of signing Ethan Ampadu last week, the loss of the Austrian will represent a “one step forward, two steps back” situation.

Daniel Farke’s Response

In a press conference after the friendly defeat against Monaco, Daniel Farke stated that the player’s absence “is to do with the transfer situation and also the contract situation and we will wait and see what the outcome is over the next days”.

Whilst not reassuring for fans, having some form of timeframe attached to the move is an encouraging sign. Thanks to the relatively quick turnaround, the club can, theoretically, respond with a new signing to fill the gap before the season begins in a couple of weeks.
