The Clarets return to the Premier League as Championship winners. The club was relegated in 2022, but produced a dominant season in the second division to pull off an immediate return. The club’s stellar campaign in 2022/23 might not be enough to avoid relegation in a tough field of big-spending teams with heaps of Premier League experience. To match the level of their fellow teams, Burnley started snatching up available talent where they were able. The moves they have completed have focused on younger stars, who the club hope to develop into a powerful team.

Who Are the Players?

Dara O’Shea

Burnley went looking for defensive talent, and found it in Dara O’Shea. O’Shea, who also plays for the Irish national team, was purchased from West Bromwich Albion. They also got him for less money than his release clause demanded.

The Irishman will likely start, or at least rotate as a starter this season. His arrival is in part down to the departure of 21 year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis following the end of his loan spell from Manchester City.

At only 24 years-old, the Irish centre-back is a good replacement for the loss of Harwood-Bellis, and could stay at the club for a long time.

Jordan Beyer

Burnley snatched centre-back Jordan Beyer from German club Borussia Monchengladbach after his loan with the Clarets expired. He was an integral part of the defence in their promotion campaign. He has represented Germany at various youth levels.

He is merely 23 years old and could be part of a long-term centre-back duo. Both Beyer and O’Shea both possess a physical style of play that will benefit them in the Premier League

Zeki Amdouni

This is by far the most shocking and exciting purchase by the Clarets this transfer window. The summer seems complete with the arrival of striker sensation Zeki Amdouni. Just 22 years old, the Swiss-representing youngster is coming off of a breakout campaign with FC Basel in the Swiss Super League.

The deal was a no brainer, as anyone could see that Amdouni is destined for more than the type of football that Basel offers. He will hope to join the ranks of academy stars like Mohamed Salah, Yann Sommer, and Manuel Akanji who have succeded at a high level.

Amdouni, who additionally holds Turkish and Tunisian citizenship, plays on the left in a forward/striker role. He was the joint top-scorer in last year’s Europa Conference League. Throughout that competition, he constantly came in clutch for Basel, and nearly took the team into the final against West Ham United.

The striker possesses the potential and the time to develop into a generational talent. He has played for the Swiss national team as well as their youth teams, and scores clutch goals for both. Hir presence for Burnley in the first season can be spelt out plainly; he is here in case Nathan Tella does not return.

Tella led the team in goals en route to their promotion, but once his loan from Southampton ended he was always going to be recalled. Amdouni is a great replacement for the Saints man, and could prove to be even better. He can play as a roaming forward who specializes in quick counter-attacks, or as a poucher with a great awareness of the field around him.

Successful So Far

Vincent Kompany’s side have had a successful transfer window so far. The additions to their defence and attacking force will make them tough to breakdown and dangerous on the counter-attack. These purchases are the efforts of a team that has no intention of being so soon relegated from the league they just returned to.
