La Liga side Real Betis have approached Tottenham Hotspurs for their Argentine midfielder, Giovani Lo Celso according to Fabrizio Romano. The journalist claimed that there are other clubs “in the race” for the Spurs midfielder, but Betis are keen on opening talks “in the next weeks”.

Lo Celso, who spent the last season on loan at Villareal, playing 29 times, is now back with the London-based side. There is already interest from other clubs for the services of the midfielder. The Argentine’s spell at Spurs has been fairly underwhelming and failed to meet expectations. The midfielder played 84 times for the Lilywhites throughout his stay in England and only managed to score 8 goals and give 6 assists.  It is not clear if the 27-year-old will be in the plans of the new manager Ange Postecoglou for next season which gives wind to more speculation.

The Italian journalist reported that there are two or three more clubs interested in signing the Argentine, the transfer expert did not name these clubs and says Spurs are aware of the situation. He posted: “There are 2/3 clubs in the race for Lo Celso but Betis are keen on opening talks in the next weeks, Spurs are aware of that.” The signing of Lo Celso could be a win-win situation for all parties involved since he has struggled to make his mark in England and is already a proven performer for the Spanish side following his previous loan spell.

A Return to Betis

The 27-year-old has previously played for the Andalusian side while on loan from Paris Saint-Germani in the 2018/19 campaign. The midfielder made 46 appearances accumulating a commendable tally of  16 goals and 6 assists.

The impressive campaign caught the eye of Tottenham and they signed the talented midfielder, initially for a season-long loan and then on a permanent transfer. It is clear that the Betis hierarchy was impressed by the Argentine’s first spell and are keen on bringing him back to Spain.

Betis will play in the Europa League next season which means a more congested fixture list, which demands larger squad depth. The Copa America winner will be a perfect signing for this purpose since he is an extremely versatile player who can play in multiple midfield roles, he has even deputized as a right winger during his time at Spurs.

Playing in deep positions he constantly makes himself available and has the ability to progress the ball from deep using his strong dribbling ability. The former PSG man is very good at exploiting pockets of space between the lines when playing higher up the pitch, from these positions he can play a forward pass or thread a through ball to runners.

His close control makes him press resistant and will be crucial to Betis’ build-up as well as their attack. Lo Celso will bring much-needed depth and versatility to the Andalusian’s midfield and will provide solutions to many issues.
