Liverpool have struck an impressive deal with new-boy Dominik Szoboszlai after being snubbed by a player now set to join Manchester United, confirms The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe. This is after the Reds officially unveiled him as a new signing from RB Leipzig.

Liverpool Find Solid Deal With Szoboszlai Signing

The Reds announced the departure of multiple midfielders after the end of the 2022/23 season and made their first acquisition in the form of midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton, handing him their no.10 shirt.

Szoboszlai appears to be the replacement for the departed Naby Keita, who, like the Hungarian, also wore the no.8 shirt made famous at Anfield by Steven Gerrard. Bascombe adds that Jurgen Klopp was initially keen on signing Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount, but he snubbed the Merseyside club in favour of Manchester United, a side for whom he is said to be “perfect”.

However, it’s further stated that the Reds are not having to pay extraordinarily high wages to Szoboszlai, who is claimed to be earning much less than the rumoured £250,000-a-week salary which Mount will be receiving at Old Trafford. The Englishman is reportedly on his way to join the Red Devils, but the Merseyside club seem to have found a solid alternative to him and someone they aren’t having to pay a fortune every week.

What Can Szoboszlai Bring to Liverpool?

It’s stated by the Telegraph that Klopp sees Szoboszlai as a new versatile signing who can play in a variety of different roles for his team – be it as a number eight, a deep-lying striker or even wide in the wing areas.

Interestingly, the midfielder spoke to Liverpool’s media about his versatility and his favourite position, saying: “To be honest, for me, it doesn’t matter – I want to be on the pitch. But of course, everybody has their own position. Of course, attacking midfielder as a 10, I can play on both 10s, left, right, on the sides also. Just I want to play.”

Szoboszlai, who was hailed as a “super talent” by his former coach Gerhard Stuber, was only signed by the Reds after they agreed to pay his £60 million release clause. The 22-year-old made 91 appearances for Leipzig, scoring 20 goals and providing 22 assists across all competitions.
