Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the signing of Tyler Roberts on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 19-year-old winger has not made a senior club appearance and will look to make a mark at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium during the 2023/24 campaign.

He became a senior Jamaica international in March 2023’s 0-0 draw with Trinidad and Tobago.

Eighth Signing: Doncaster Rovers Mean Business

Roberts is an eighth signing for Rovers since Grant McCann’s return as manager in May. The Northern Irish coach has added numbers all over the pitch with returning goalkeeper Ian Lawlor, experienced centre-back Richard Wood and former Sheffield United midfielder George Broadbent among the incoming.

McCann told the club website about his acquisition of winger Tyler Roberts: “Tyler is a really exciting young winger that I’ve no doubt will get the fans off their seats. He’s direct and can play off the right or left side.

“We’ve been watching him for quite a while and we were really pleased when we heard we could get him here.

“This is his first loan but he’s more than ready for the step-up to men’s football and speaking to him, he’s really excited about the opportunity.”

McCann also offered appreciation to Premier League side Wolves for understanding the importance of Roberts coming in early, adding: “Wolves have been brilliant, especially in recognising the importance of having players in from the start of pre-season. Tyler will be with us throughout and he’ll be ready to go.”

Roberts has 20 goal involvements (16 goals and four assists) in 37 games for Wolves U18s and has also struck four times for the U21s.

As recently as last season, he scored in Wolves U21s’ 2-1 win over Stockport County, who are expected to be right up there in League Two again this coming season – as Doncaster too hope to be following their 2021/22 relegation from League One and subsequent 18th place finish in the fourth tier.

Speaking to the club website, Roberts added: “I’m really excited to be joining Rovers. It’s a big step in my career, getting the first bit of first team action and playing in the league in real football.

“I’m excited to see how I will handle it.”

Roberts signed a professional contract with Wolves in 2021. He is Rovers’ first loan signing of the transfer window.

Doncaster are looking forward to the EFL’s fixture release day, set for Thursday, June 22.
