Phil Hay: Leeds Now Set to Start ‘Major Overhaul’ by Selling International Forward

Elland Road, where Leeds United aim to tempt Nat Phillips

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts is due to complete a move to Birmingham City in the coming days as part of a “major overhaul” at Elland Road. The striker spent last season on loan at Queen’s Park Rangers and is a regular Wales international when fit. Roberts has previously won awards at the club for his excellent community work.

Why is Tyler Roberts Leaving Leeds United?

In the majority of his time at the Whites, Tyler Roberts has been a somewhat peripheral figure. He has always struggled to break into the first team in his most comfortable position (number nine) as he has been such behind Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah in the Championship, with Rodrigo and Joe Gelhardt further making things difficult in the Premier League.

The Welshman’s issues with injury also didn’t help, with constant knee struggles forcing him to the sidelines. A change in scenery might lead to some more luck and a lot more playing time.

What Can Birmingham City Expect?

Birmingham City can expect a very effective false nine. The international has always been good with his feet, working effectively in very tight spaces as a creative forward. However, his finishing tends to be subpar. For a club that only narrowly scored more than one goal per game last season, Roberts isn’t necessarily the perfect option.

Who is Leeds United’s Replacement?

The Whites don’t necessarily need to replace Tyler Roberts, as there is plenty of attacking talent already at the club. Joe Gelhardt’s spell at Sunderland showed that he can play well in this division, with Georginio Rutter also likely looking to stamp some authority on the Championship. Elland Road’s issue at the moment isn’t about recruitment, as with Birmingham City, but retention.
