The latest edition of the Sunderland weekly round-up takes a look at the latest news from the Stadium of Light. As is usually the case at this time of year, transfer rumours are in full swing and at Sunderland it’s no different.

The well-documented transfer of Jobe Bellingham appears to be getting closer. Plus the Black Cats are also reportedly closing in on an Australian defender, a Dutch midfielder and a Portuguese striker.

Sunderland Transfer Rumours: Four Players Close to Joining 

Jobe Bellingham Deal Close

Jobe Bellingham, the brother of England international Jude, is set to sign a four-year deal at Sunderland. The reported fee of £3 million is set to be much less according to the Sunderland Echo due to the player having just one year left on his contract at Birmingham City.

Bellingham was in attendance at the Stadium of Light for the playoff semifinal first leg and already has close links with Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, first-team coach Mike Dodds and head of coaching Stuart English.

Fee Agreed for Australian Defender

A fee of £500,000 has been agreed between Sunderland and Central Westcoast Mariners for defender Nectarios Triantis. According to reports on Bein Sports and in the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have acted quickly to beat off interest from across Europe of the 20-year-old central defender.

Triantis is highly thought of in Australia and across Europe and is expected to become a feature in the national team having impressed for his club and the Socceroos U20 side. The A-Leagues Men’s grand final is expected to be Triantis’s last game for the Mariners ahead of his move.

Dutch Midfielder Continues to be Linked

Heerenveen midfielder Thom Haye is on Sunderland’s radar this summer according to Sander de Vries of the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder Courant and Joe Nicholson of the Sunderland Echo.

28-year-old Haye has one year left on his current contract with The Black Cats and French club Toulouse interested. According to the same report, Heerenveen are looking to add Chelsea youngster Charlie Webster to the squad this summer. This could pave the way for Haye to be moved on.

Haye joined his current club in January 2022 and played 31 games last season primarily as a defensive midfielder.

Young Benfica Striker Heading to Wearside

According to Portuguese newspaper Record, and the Sunderland Echo, Benfica’s 19-year-old striker Luís Semedo is close to moving to Wearside. Despite the best efforts of the Portuguese giants to extend his deal, Semedo’s contract will expire this summer with Sunderland set to benefit.

The 6ft 2in product of Benfica’s academy was the top scorer in the Youth League. He then stepped up to the B team last season scoring 14 goals. He has also experienced first-team football and represented his country at U20 level.
