How Manchester United Have Lined-Up Recently

Erik ten Hag has been plagued with injury concerns over the last few weeks but is still trying his best to field his strongest lineup possible. The backline has undergone major changes recently, but the likes of David de Gea, Luke Shaw (who recently agreed on a new deal), Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof are mainstays at the back.

Carabao Cup final hero Casemiro is vital to the team, as are Christian Eriksen and captain Bruno Fernandes. Marcus Rashford keeps building on an impressive campaign, while Antony is getting better too. Anthony Martial, who has struggled with fitness issues throughout the season, could be back for this one.

Manchester United Recent Form and Tactics

The Red Devils have been in topsy-turvy form in recent weeks, having only won two of their last five games across all competitions. With the clash against Villa being their third in a week, it’ll be a challenge for them to win it.

Despite the limitations in his squad right now, Ten Hag remains constant with his 4-3-3 formation and attacking style. He likes to urge his players to move the ball from the back quickly, and get it out into wide areas. The wingers are tasked to carry the ball forward and go more central towards the final third – while the wing-backs add more width with their overlapping runs. The midfielders like to send their forwards through with defence-splitting passes and work hard to regain possession inside the opposition box too.

Manchester United Key Players

Rashford has been the only consistent forward for United this season, getting key goals all through the campaign. With his excellent off-the-ball runs, dribbling ability and improved finishing – he’s a threat against any team in the Premier League and will aim to be at his ruthless best against Villa.

Martial, who was dubbed as “definitely” the best finisher at Old Trafford by Ten Hag, aims to prove that by finishing off his chances and being more proactive in linking-up moves. Fernandes is the orchestrator in their attack, making all the key passes to send his teammates through – while Antony needs to be more decisive with his work in the final third. United need to be defensively strong to keep this in-form Villa side quiet, which means the entire back-four has to work overtime, and David de Gea needs to be at his shot-stopping best to keep a clean sheet.

Manchester United Injuries to Consider

Lisandro Martinez and Donny van de Beek are out for the rest of the season with nasty injuries. Raphael Varane is still unavailable due to a knock, while Harry Maguire faces a test to be fit for his one after missing the Tottenham Hotspur clash. Alejandro Garnacho, however, has seemingly recovered earlier than expected after signing a new contract.
