Official: Club Releases Statement on ‘Dynamic’ Chelsea Target

AC Milan have issued a statement refuting reports that contract negotiations with Chelsea-target Rafael Leao have broken down

AC Milan have bit back at claims that there has a been a breakdown in their contract negotiations with Rafael Leao, releasing an official statement on their twitter account. The Serie A giants are trying to agree a new deal with the Portuguese forward amid reported interest from other clubs, with Chelsea thought to be one of those clubs.

Milan Still in Negotiations With Rafael Leao

After the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed that Leao could look to leave Milan after a breakdown in communications, Milan took to Twitter to make an official statement clarifying on the entire situation.

As also confirmed by Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports, AC Milan stated: “With regard to the article published today by the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport entitled: ‘Leao Milan total rupture’, AC Milan would like to clarify that the negotiations with Rafael Leao have not been interrupted. The suggestion of an alleged frost between the parties is not only totally unfounded but also harmful to the club and its player. In fact, AC Milan continues the dialogue with Leao and his entourage in a serene and professional way.”

This confirms that the reigning Serie A champions are still holding talks with the Portuguese forward’s representatives as they try to get him to sign a new deal. Rafael Leao’s current contract with Milan expires in June 2024.

Leao Yet to Make Decision on Future Amid Chelsea Interest

With talks over a new contract still ongoing, there could still be hope for interested clubs that the 23-year-old winger may become available in the near future. Leao’s hesitation to sign a new deal with Rossoneri could be enough of a sign for clubs like Chelsea to try and test the Serie A outfit’s resolve.

The Portugal International was dubbed as ‘dynamic’ by Ian Wright after scoring in his country’s 6-0 win over Switzerland at the World Cup, giving him his second goal of the tournament. He’s been enjoying a prolific campaign with Milan, having scored nine goals and provided as many assists in 27 appearances so far in this campaign. Therefore, it’s not hard to see why clubs are keeping a close eye on how Leao’s contract negotiations are going.
