Tottenham Recent Form: LWLWD

Having conceded first in their last nine matches, a clear area for improvement is Tottenham’s defence. They suffered a Boxing Day blow to Brentford as they left West London with only a point.

This means they have only two wins in their last five games, those being narrow victories against Bournemouth and Leeds. On top of this, they have conceded at least twice in each of their last six games.

Aston Villa Recent Form: WLWWL

The Villans were on a fine run of form before the World Cup and will hope to rediscover it against Tottenham.

They have beaten Brentford, Brighton and Manchester United in their last five games, all of whom are high flying this season. Unai Emery will hope to rectify the loss against Liverpool this Sunday as the ex-Arsenal manager returns to North London. However, on their three trips to London so far this campaign, Villa have failed to win.

Tottenham did the double over Aston Villa last season, one being a 4-0 thumping at Villa Park and the other a closely battled 2-1 early on in the season. However, going back a little further to May 19th 2021, Aston Villa clinched a victory at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, ending a six-year streak without a win against The Lilywhites.

In the 170 matches between the two, Tottenham trump Villa by 77-57 wins. Spurs have a lucky streak on New Year’s Day, winning seven of their last eight games on the 1st of January, with a 1-0 loss to Southampton in 2020 being the anomaly.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa Prediction

With Cristian Romero returning to the frame after his successes for Argentina the Spurs defence may be slightly more solid than it was last time out. Then adding to that a home crowd deprived of club Football for over a month, the atmosphere alone should drive Tottenham over the finish line. Although Unai Emery has got his side playing some good football, and with Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings upfront goals are expected, the home team are the favourites and goals seem a guarantee so a 3-2 win for Spurs seems a fair prediction.

Current Odds: Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Tottenham are the favourites to win with SkyBet giving their chances of a victory at 8/13. Aston Villa are deemed the underdogs with odds of 4/1, and it is 3/1 for another Spurs draw.
