USA Current Run of Form

The USA is currently on a poor run of form. This has seen only one win in their last five matches, a 5-0 victory over a predictable poor Grenada side. The most concerning result will be a 2-0 loss to Japan in the Kirin Cup, with the high press of Japan demonstrating that Gregg Berhalter’s strategy of holding the ball and playing over the press might not work against quality sides.

Wales Current Run of Form

Wales are on a similarly dire run of form. Rob Page’s side have lost all but one of their last five matches, which required an incredibly late Brennan Johnson equaliser against Belgium. A strong result against the USA is an absolute must if the Welsh look to get out of the group stage of the World Cup 2022.

Recent Head to Head

Wales and the USA have played twice in their history, with an international friendly in November 2020 being the most recent. It was a somewhat dull affair that ended 0-0, with the Americans dominating possession. The most recent match before that was in May 2003, and was so long ago that the Americans took a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Eddie Lewis and Landon Donovan.

USA vs Wales Prediction

This could be a battle for those with an interest in the tactics of football without too much interesting play within it. The USA play a deep-lying passing game, drawing their opponents out and looking for balls over the top to Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Brenden Aaronson of Leeds United. With Rob Page’s side preferring to sit deep, it’ll be interesting to see if Berhalter’s side persuades the Wales team to come out of its shell, or if Gareth Bale and Dan James can hit on the counter. Expect a narrow victory if anyone is to win, 1-0 to the USMNT.

Current Odds: USA vs Wales

Wales are favourites at 7/4, followed by the draw at 21/10. A USMNT win is the outsider on 9/4.
