The World Cup is almost here, and Group D provides the opportunity for one of the bigger surprises of the competition. Read on to find out what Last Word on Football thinks will happen in Group D, and who could overcome some of the more common World Cup predictions.

Group D World Cup Predictions

France to Falter Under Pressure

The French squad has an incredible amount of talent from top to bottom. Although Mike Maignan is unable to attend the World Cup, Hugo Lloris is an experienced presence in net for Tottenham Hotspur, with Kylian Mbappe providing an incredible cutting edge at the top with service from an incredible midfield featuring Aurelien Tchouameni and Edouard Camavinga.

However, Les Bleus may struggle in this group. This squad has a tendency to fall apart, with rumours of arguments ripping their way through the squad at Euro 2020. There’s plenty of ability here, but a relatively poor run of international form means that Denmark have a better chance of winning the group.

Denmark to Win the Group

Denmark always have the ability to be a dark horse. Thinking back to Euro 2020, the side managed to grow into the later stages of the tournament without their key player Christian Eriksen, now of Manchester United. Now he’s back, and the Danes look as powerful as ever.

In the last six months alone Kasper Hjulmand’s side has beaten the French twice, scoring two goals on both occasions. They have all the skill and tactical nouse they need to win the group, with a clean three wins being a very feasible route to the last sixteen for Denmark.

Australia to Finish Down, Under Qualification Spots

Australia are a relatively hard side to judge. They play against primarily Asian teams, squeaking through qualifying in a penalty win over Peru. Aaron Mooy will be an important part of the way that the Aussies play at this competition, with the Socceroos likely looking to upset one of France and Denmark after a win against Tunisia.

The team from Down Under will be looking to make an impact on the World Cup, but will likely come up against too much raw talent to break out of the group. There’s upset potential here, but not as much as the Australians would like.

Tunisia Bomb Out in the Groups

Tunisia is a side that has been improving as of late, with major victories over Japan and Chile in the Kirin Cup as a statement of intent before the World Cup. However, these victories were overcome by a slightly more worrying pair of matches. Brazil hammered Tunisia 5-1 after the “Eagles of Carthage” managed to sneak their way past Comoros 1-0.

Far from an exciting team, Tunisia have a tendency to sit back and protect their goal. Forcing opposition into mistakes is all the team really has, so expect a disappointing collapse to fourth place in the group stages. There could be a win over Australia coming, but it doesn’t feel likely.
