Potter More Concerned With Kante’s Injury Recovery Than Extending His Stay

The 31-year-old midfielder is currently recovering from a hamstring injury, for which he underwent an operation recently. He is already ruled out of the upcoming Qatar World Cup.

Kante is in an awkward position, as his contract is currently set to expire in June 2023. After that, he’ll be a free agent unless he signs an extension with the Blues. When asked about the midfielder’s contract situation, Potter said: “The most important thing is to help him get fit. He has a long road ahead. We have to make sure he gets the right treatment – when he is enjoying his football, we can think about the contract then.”

Kante’s Glittering Career Recapped

The 31-year-old might have struggled with injury issues over the last few years, but nobody can deny the kind of decorated career he’s had. Kante has won all major titles with Chelsea, including the Premier League and Champions League. He has also enjoyed a lot of success with France, winning the World Cup with them in 2018 and also the UEFA Nations League in 2021.

The Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in world football over the last decade and was once dubbed “a fire fighter” by ex-Liverpool player Jamie Redknapp. He’s made 422 appearances in his club career, scoring 23 goals and providing 28 assists – as well as earning 53 caps for France too. But now, Kante faces a tough road to recovery from an injury that threatens to dampen his career.

With his Chelsea contract due to expire in the Summer of 2023, the 31-year-old will have to come back strongly next year and prove his quality still remains to earn a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
