Fabrizio Romano: Graham Potter to Have Discussions With Exiled Midfielder Once Compared to Toni Kroos Over His Chelsea Future

Denis Zakaria

Chelsea manager Graham Potter will have discussions soon with summer signing Denis Zakaria over his future at the club, confirms Fabrizio Romano. This comes after the Switzerland midfielder has not even played a single minute of football with the Blues since Thomas Tuchel was replaced.

Chelsea to Have Discussions Over Denis Zakaria’s Future

Zakaria Left in No-Man’s Land After Tuchel’s Exit

The decision to sign the 25-year-old midfielder was that of Thomas Tuchel, who wanted to have more options in the midfield after the shaky start to the new season. That is why Chelsea worked swiftly to sign him on loan from Juventus for this season, with an option to make the move permanent next year.

Romano adds that he has been left in a ‘difficult position’ since moving to Stamford Bridge, as he is yet to play a single minute of football or make his debut since joining on deadline day last month. Before moving to the London side, Zakaria was considered as a potential squad option for Juventus – who wanted to keep him and probably would’ve rotated him with other options. But the midfielder decided to go through with the deal and has been left in a difficult situation right now.

Potter will speak to the Swiss midfielder about his future after not even keeping him in his matchday squad for the three games he’s managed them since taking over last month. It’ll only be after those discussions that the 25-year-old will be sure of what lies in his future at Stamford Bridge.

Zakaria Ending Up as Chelsea’s Most Inefficient Summer Signing

The London side splurged over a record £250 million on new signings in the summer, with Todd Boehly bringing in eight new players – with some being for the future and some to immediately improve the squad. Zakaria was among the first-team signings, but has ended up as a total flop so far – not even having made his debut for Chelsea.

The Blues reportedly paid a £2.7 million loan fee for the Swiss international, who was once given big praise by German legend Lothar Matthaus – who claimed he reminded him of Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos. But the 25-year-old’s future is now riddled with uncertainty as Chelsea are yet to decide what to do with him.
