‘There is a Feeling’: Fabrizio Romano Reveals Manchester United Are Looking to Move for Star With ‘World Class’ Potential in January

Manchester United are likely to continue their pursuit of PSV’s Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window but will face competition from other English clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano.

United Almost Signed the Dutch Player in August

Manchester United came close to agreeing a deal in August before focusing primarily on completing the transfer of Antony. Gakpo was open to a potential move to Manchester and was ready to accept the terms offered by United.

Leeds United also narrowly missed out on signing the 23-year-old when their deal with PSV collapsed on deadline day. Despite offering more than Southampton, the Dutch side ultimately rejected the bid and decided to keep the forward at the club. Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal advised Gakpo to stay put until the World Cup, which will take place in November.

Fabrizio Romano Provides Promising Update

According to Romano, the Red Devils had “good contacts with the player” and an advantage that sways in their favour is that Gakpo shares an agent with Erik ten Hag, the United manager. He also reported: “There is a feeling that English clubs will come back for Gakpo in January.

“United know he could be an option.”

United fans have deemed the Dutchman a “potential world-class player” and have advised the club to act quickly before another team secures his signature.

Gakpo Continues to Light up the Pitch – His Goal Contributions Are Outstanding

The forward entered the 2022/2023 campaign on the back of his best season to date; scoring 21 and assisting 15 goals in 47 games across all competitions, and he’s looking to go even further this season. Already, Gakpo has netted ten goals and assisted nine in only 13 games.

Gakpo is also proving to be a serious contender for Netherlands’ World Cup squad. For the senior national team, he has already made five contributions in nine games – showing his ability to perform for both club and country. Remarkably, he has had 20 direct goal involvements in his last 13 appearances. The forthcoming tournament could prove to be crucial in Gakpo making a name for himself on one of the biggest stages in world football.

United in Need of Forward Additions if Injuries Continue to Plague Squad

Ten Hag could look to the starlet in January to bolster the forward options in the United squad after the team have fallen victim to numerous injuries early in the season. Anthony Martial is yet to make a start for the Reds due to a hamstring issue at the beginning of August and an achilles injury later the same month.
