Fabrizio Romano Issues Update on the Future of 173-Appearance Inter Milan Defender

Stefan de Vrij

Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on the rumours of Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij leaving the club in January when the transfer window opens again.

The transfer guru revealed the following via CaughtOffside:  “At the moment there are no negotiations between Inter and any other club for de Vrij, he could be on the move only in case a good proposal will arrive to the Italian club as otherwise, de Vrij could be free to sign with any other club in June 2023, being out of contract as things stand.”

Newcastle United are thought to be among the clubs interested in the Netherlands international.

A Potential Free Transfer Next Summer

As Fabrizio Romano noted, de Vrij is out of contract at Inter next summer, meaning that interested clubs could potentially bide their time and attempt to sign the Dutchman on a free at the end of the season.

This would represent a very good deal as the centre-back brings huge amounts of talent combined with plenty of experience in one of Europe’s top leagues.

The 30-year-old has made a total of 173 appearances for the Nerazzurri and has won three trophies at the club, including a Scudetto at the end of the 2020/21 season. The Dutch defender previously played at Lazio, where he made 118 appearances before his switch to Inter.

For clubs looking to strengthen their defensive options, there are far riskier investments than signing the experienced centre-back, potentially even on a free transfer if a deal can be done in the summer.  Despite turning 31 before the beginning of the 2023/23 campaign, de Vrij still has plenty to offer and would represent a fairly low-risk, high-reward option at at centre-back for many top European sides.
