Chelsea Will Have to Pay £130 Million To Sign Serie A Winner

While the summer transfer window has just shut some eyes are already on January. Chelsea were active on deadline day but have pushed some deals off until the winter.

In an update from Ben Jacobs, he details the status of the negotiations for Edson Alvarez and Rafael Leao. The AC Milan forward is not a certainty to make the move to London as his club has been explicit that his release clause will need to be paid. Jacobs has previously reported that this clause is worth roughly £130 million.

The attacker had a breakout season in 2021/22 as he helped power his team to their first league title in a decade. The Portuguese international spent one season at Lille before making the move to Italy where he has flourished. His last campaign was his most impressive to date as he scored 14 goals and was named Serie A Most Valuable Player.

It’s been a quick rise for the 23-year-old who is now only available to suitors if his massive release clause is triggered.

Is Rafael Leao A Good Signing?

While football fans love to see big money thrown at promising players, the question has to be asked if this is a good deal for The Blues. They already have plenty of attacking talent with Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling available, that’s not to mention Mason Mount who score almost as many goals as Leao last season.

Splashing nine figures on a player who may not provide a major instant improvement to the team seems like bad business. Even if the former Sporting CP man were to operate as a striker, the cheaper alternative of Tammy Abraham will be available from next summer when his buyback clause kicks in.
