Former Chelsea ‘Flop’ Could Make Shock Summer Move to Manchester United

Alvaro Morata

Manchester United could make a move for former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata before the conclusion of the transfer window on Thursday, September 1, as per Rob Dawson.

According to Jason Burt of The Telegraph: “Intermediaries have encouraged them [United] to consider Atletico Madrid’s Alvaro Morata who had been expected to return to Juventus and who the Spanish club are desperate to sell with a year left on his contract.

“United have also considered Morata in the past”.

The Star Could Return to England to Play Under Erik ten Hag

The 29-year-old spent two seasons on loan to Juventus from Atletico Madrid before returning to his parent club this summer and scoring a hat-trick against the Italian giants in a pre-season friendly game.

Man United Suffering With Lack of Squad Depth

United’s interest for a striker comes after a disappointing start to their 2022/2023 Premier League campaign, when they lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. Anthony Martial was expected to start up front for the Reds after netting three goals on the club’s pre-season tour, but was ruled out of the game with a minor hamstring injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo started the game on the substitute’s bench with Christian Eriksen utilised in a false nine role, if anything, showing United’s severe lack of forward depth.

The team lacked creativity and failed to look overly threatening throughout the game, and only ended up on the scoresheet through an own goal.

Erik ten Hag will also be keen to reinforce his attacking options amid the ongoing situation surrounding Ronaldo and his desire to leave Manchester. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is still actively seeking a new suitor for the five-time Ballon D’Or winner. Ronaldo is adamant on playing Champions League football this season to further add to his successes in Europe.

Morata provides experience and proven goal-scoring ability across England, Spain and Italy – in a number of competitions. He has an array of honours to his name, including being a two-time Champions League winner and lifting the Super Cup, Club World Cup at Real Madrid, as well as winning the La Liga and Copa del Rey twice.

His time at Juventus saw Morata win the Serie A twice, Coppa Italia three times and the Supercoppa Italiana.

Morata Has Struggled to Tie Down Striker Position

Despite an impressive collection of medals, the Spaniard has struggled to cement his place in any team as a first-choice striker; Morata has never been able to break a 20-goal season.

However, United are in dire need of reinforcements and a player who is able to contribute throughout a hectic season can surely only positively help the squad.

With a long season ahead, is an unhappy Ronaldo and unproven Martial enough to compete with the rest of the top six? They face rivals Liverpool at home on August 22 and after last season’s 5-0 thrashing at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag will know his side cannot face another embarrassment to that degree.

Action is needed in the transfer market for the Manchester side, the sooner, the better.
