A Veteran Addition to the Attack
Sanchez may be a tad past his prime at 33 years old, but he will still bring a veteran presence and talent to the attack of a Champions League side. Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 last season, 15 points behind Paris Saint-Germain.
Marseille’s defence was solid throughout the season but their attack failed to shine. PSG scored 27 more goals than Marseille, whereas teams placed behind Les Phocéens such as Monaco, Rennes, and Lyon all scored more as well.
Sanchez scored five goals and provided three assists last season in 27 Serie A matches for Inter. He also combined for three goals and two assists in 11 Champions League and Coppa Italia matches. These aren’t bad numbers for an attacking option off the bench, but of course, nowhere near the production Sanchez provided in the past. He was an incredible talent for Arsenal, although he did flop at Manchester United.

Marseille’s attack should be stronger this season. Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik is a stellar finisher. Cengiz Under, Cedric Bakambu, and Bamba Deing showed flashes last season as well. Dimitri Payet, another former Premier League star at West Ham United, is also featured. Luis Suarez, who recently signed from Granada, also bagged a brace in Marseille’s league opening victory this past Sunday. Sanchez provides depth that can help Marseille challenge PSG as well as compete in the Champions League.
