Newcastle United to Make Third Bid for England International With Tottenham Hotspur Also Interested

James Maddison

Newcastle United will go in again for James Maddison, reports Fabrizio Romano in his daily briefing for Caught Offside. The Magpies have already seen two bids knocked back by Leicester City, who insist that the England international is not for sale.

As well as Newcastle, who are eyeing sustainable improvement since their Saudi-backed takeover, Maddison also has interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who themselves have undergone a lot of personnel changes since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

Tough Deal to Pull Off

Leicester are the only team in the Premier League not to have made a signing this summer, and that makes letting go of Maddison all the more difficult for them.

Star men Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana are also being linked with moves away. If the Foxes were to lose both of them as well as Maddison, they could seriously struggle this season.

All three of those players mentioned started in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Brentford, with Leicester letting a two-goal lead slip thanks to second-half strikes from Ivan Toney and Josh Dasilva.

It suggests that even with those players, Leicester may not be one of the main challengers for a European spot this season, especially with no incomings on the horizon.

For that reason, the Foxes are setting high prices for their star players – so much so that Romano says there is “no price”.

Therefore, it could be a tough deal for Newcastle to pull off, having already seen a bid worth £50 million rejected.

There is still interest from Tottenham, but Romano adds that it’s not a priority for them and they are more focussed on moving Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks out of the club.
