Manchester City in Talks to Sign 21-Year-Old Once Called ‘One of the Best of His Age’ After Marc Cucurella Blow

Manchester City are holding talks with Anderlecht over the possibility of signing their talented left-back Sergio Gomez, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano. The 21-year-old is viewed as a future star by the defending Premier League champions amid their lack of options at left-back.

Pep Guardiola Impressed After Extensively Scouting Gomez

The Citizens consider the left-back as a high-potential talent that can develop into a quality first-team player for them in the future. They extensively scouted the 21-year-old and their move for the Spaniard is not related to any other transfer targets for the senior team.

Romano adds that there are also discussions going on about potentially loaning him to La Liga club Girona if an agreement can be reached with Anderlecht. The youngster is personally keen on a move as well.

The Premier League giants remain in the hunt for a senior left-back to compete with Joao Cancelo, who is their only viable option in that position. While they were interested in signing Brighton defender Marc Cucurella, the Manchester giants had a £30 million bid rejected and have decided to end their chase for him. They are, although, still looking for alternative options.

Possible Replacement for Oleksandr Zinchenko?

Pep Guardiola allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to leave last month, as he opted to join Arsenal for more regular game-time at the Emirates Stadium. But Gomez has the quality to be a possible long-term replacement for the Ukrainian defender, as he shares some similar traits.

Like Zinchenko, the Spaniard can also play multiple roles. He usually operates as a left-back, attacker midfielder, and even as a right-back if necessary. A product of Barcelona’s ‘La Masia’ youth academy, he won the UEFA Youth League with them in the 2017/18 season as well.

The 21-year-old is a regular for Spain’s U21 side, having scored four goals in five appearances for them. He has a high potential and was even praised by Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc upon joining them in 2018, as he said: “Sergio Gomez is undoubtedly one of the best players of his age in the world.”

The Spaniard made 49 appearances for Anderlecht last season after joining them from Dortmund, scoring 7 goals and providing 15 assists. He’s an exciting, creative full-back who can add more depth to the Citizens squad as well as secure the left-back position for the long-term.
