Jermain Defoe and Yaya Toure To Become Tottenham Hotspur Academy Coaches

Jermain Defoe

Jermain Defoe and Yaya Toure are set to join Tottenham Hotspur’s academy coaching staff, according to Dan Kilpatrick of the Standard.

There is a staff overhaul going on in the backroom of the club, specifically within the academy. Kilpatrick reports that Defoe and Toure will be in charge of their own age group of academy players.

Tottenham Continue To Build for the Future

Defoe and Toure are part of a larger shakeup which also includes the appointment of Simon Davies (ex-Manchester City coach) as head of methodology at the Spurs academy.

In doing so, the club are helping these fantastic former Premier League stars to earn their coaching stripes. But both players have a great deal of experience and know-how to pass on to the next generation of Tottenham Hotspur stars.

Defoe recently presented the Walter Tull Memorial Cup to the first team after they beat Rangers 2-1 during pre-season. Spurs will now be hoping to continue their run of good pre-season form with a win against AS Roma on Saturday.

The Spurs striker has made multiple returns to the club in different capacities. The 39-year-old went out on loan to Portsmouth from Tottenham in 2008, before joining them permanently for a season. He then of course made his return to N17 scoring 47 goals in 135 Premier League appearances. But Defoe was ready to move on to another challenge in Toronto. Again Defoe made a brief return via a loan back to the Lilywhites.

In total, Defoe has an impressive record of 227 goals in 624 league matches across three different countries and four different leagues. Spurs fans will be hoping that he can pass on his instinct for goal.

Yaya Toure at Spurs

It is easy to see how Defoe has taken up a position as coach at the Spurs academy after being so connected with the club. Yaya Toure, meanwhile, is another Premier League legend who has so much to offer the Spurs starlets. He has in fact already been working at the club since December 2021. So far he has mainly been helping out with the under-18’s in a bid to get his UEFA A coaching Licence.

Yaya Toure isn’t new to coaching, having worked with ex-Spurs coach Chris Ramsey at Queens Park Rangers, as well as having coached in Ukraine and Russia.

He has completed his coaching course and is ready to properly take charge within the Spurs academy.
