Calvin Bassey: Rangers Star Looks Set to Depart Ibrox

Nigerian International to Bolster Ajax

Rangers defender Bassey looks set to depart Ibrox and join Ajax, with the deal expected to be finalised in the coming days. The deal will net the Scottish giants £18.7 million with the potential to collect a further £4.25 million in add-ons.

Rangers have also negotiated a 10% sell-on clause which has seemingly been included in the deal because of interest from several Premier League clubs, including Brighton & Hove Albion. Many teams across Europe have shown interest in Bassey, but Ajax have stolen a march on their competitors and look set to complete this deal shortly.

The Nigerian has enjoyed a wonderful time in Scotland after joining from Leicester City two years ago. He has shown his versatility when impressing at both centre-back and left-back on the road to the Europa League final.

At 22 years old, a transfer to Ajax is a clever move by the player, as the Dutch champi0ns have a rich history of developing players, which will have undoubtedly played a part in him picking Ajax as his next destination.

A Strong Signing

Bassey is comfortable in possession and is rarely rushed on the ball. When on the ball he often plays short, crisp passes into his attacking teammates. His physical stature is undoubtedly one of his best assets and he often shrugs off opposition players with ease.

His recovery prowess is exceptional, as proven in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, when he somehow got back to make a last-ditch tackle which stopped a certain goal. Bassey has great positional sense when defending in a low block which will be extremely important for Ajax in the Champions League. His anticipation when defending is normally strong, where he also wins the majority of aerial duels.
